Police station attack

and people still don't see the need for the return of the death penalty?

The cops would still be dead, wouldn't they? Except if you believe in Minority Report.

Apart from small other facts (like death penalty does not result in less violence or crime).

Yeah, I used to feel like that as well, until people got found guilty of 'racism' and received ridiculous fines. One would not want such a judge to hand out death penalties as well.

They should have had such security already. This is not the first time case of an armed robbery on a police station.
All our local police stations in Helderberg are enclosed and have guard houses.

I have never seen the guard houses manned. You can also walk straight into the detectives and ops section, no questions asked.

They in the very least should allow people to sign in, put access control in place. Our local security companies are more secure than our military bases, use it as a example.

Eish that's hectic.

No mention on the recovery of the stolen van. Perhaps they were after the police van to use in some other crime, like a cash in transit heist or something.

R.I.P. Condolences to all that are nearest and dearest to them.

What a sad state of affairs we are in.

Sad for the families.
I would guess that the main reason for the attack was to obtain firearms.
The chances are that, the early hours, the police were sleeping at their stations.

True, kind of difficult to call ADT when you are sleeping.

RIP, may the families seek the comfort that only the Lord can provide.

Correct. It is a standard design. But not used. Nearly every building you enter nowadays have some form of access control. Just not police stations. No CCTV?

Eastern Cape attack on police not the first time - looking back at cops under siege

The attack by robbers on the Engcobo police station is the second time that officers there have come under attack.

In March 2017‚ a Hollywood style stick-up took place just after midnight in the Eastern Cape town. An estimated 15 armed robbers had drilled their way into a Standard Bank in Ngcobo and shot at police‚ the police station and houses nearby.

The robbers allegedly tied up a security guard and got into the bank by cutting open an ATM with angle grinders. Police said the robbers took up positions all over the town and started firing at police when a police vehicle approached the scene.

The police returned fire and for a while only the rattling of the firearms was heard. One police officer was hurt and was rushed to hospital.

The robbers raced off in high performance vehicles including an Audi‚ BMW‚ a Toyota Fortuner and a Toyota Hilux.

Police officials were described as being left traumatised by the attack and were assured by the authorities that social workers would be sent to debrief them.

Other attacks on cop shops last year include:

March 2017: Thirty weapons were stolen from the Peddie police station. Eight firearms were recovered after police arrested suspects the following month. The gang broke into the police station’s strongroom through the roof to steal the firearms‚ which included R5 assault rifles‚ handguns and shotguns.

June 2017: A sergeant at the Lingelethu West police station in Khayelitsha‚ Cape Town‚ was shot in the face in the early hours of the morning by attackers who entered the police station under the pretext of reporting a robbery. The officer survived.

June 2017: Two constables were shot dead at the Koffiefontein Police Station in the Free State.

August 2017: Suspects broke into the Kimberley police station but only got away with clothing.

November 2017: A police officer was shot during an attempted robbery at the Elandslaagte police station near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal.

CAPE TOWN - The police's top managers have been advised to purchase CCTV cameras and body cameras for all the country's police stations to improve security.

...

The oversight committee's chairperson, Francois Beukman, says parliamentarians have already made recommendations on how the SAPS can improve the safety of police officers on duty.

He says fresh measures should be implemented as a matter of urgency.

Beukman believes some of service's R87 billion budget should be spent on CCTV cameras at police stations and on body cameras for officers.

“That is a huge budget and we believe there is space within the visible policing budget to make these technologies available.”

SAPS management will be asked to brief the committee on an implementation plan by the end of next month.

Didn't we go ahead with the Integrated Justice System (IJS), which included CCTV surveillance, back in the day and why weren't police stations covered by the system?

fight fire with fire.
The cops will still be dead, but so will their murderers.
There is zero fear of consequence in this country and it's getting worse every day.
At some point parents are going to have to start telling their children again that murdering / stealing / raping is not right.
Perhaps when they start seeing consequence this might happen.
Until then, we rely on morals ...

Because death penalty creates fear and has significantly reduced the murder rate in countries where it exists. All literature and research (except NRA funded) proves the opposite since the 16th century.

It will make us feel better if they are dead.

That’s called revenge or populism, not justice.

Allow public lynching in townships then, we’ll be a step closer to Saudi Arabia human rights wise.

This reminds me of the late 20th century Colombia. South Africa is truly the Worlds crime capital of 21st century. The senseless murders of policeman and woman are ment to send a message. The question is: who is in charge?

Who is in charge of what?

At the moment Afghanistan is probably safer than most of SA, so that won't really matter anyway.
