I thought I would do a small write up on my journey of purchasing a vehicle in the USA. In my previous posts, I've documented my experience on scaling down in prep for emigration from SA. I bought a cheap Honda as a run around, and drove that for about 7 months. It fulfilled its purpose, it was clean, reliable and cheap. And when the time came for us to sell up and jump on a plane, I was able to sell it off and I actually made a bit of money on it due to its condition. I was asked by someone here, why did I even bother, detailing it, if all it was meant for was cheap reliable transportation? And the short answer was, Because I like driving a super clean car, no matter the age. I'm OCD like that.

Anyways, onto my experience across the pond. When we arrived, I got myself a rental to get us around. It was a new Hyundai Tuscon. We drove that around for about a month, and once I got my drivers licence and Social Security sorted, it was time to get my own vehicle. I looked at getting something decent as the vehicles here are fairly affordable, in price and interest rates offered. However, when I got serious about something and applied for finance, I was offered ridiculous interest rates, as I have zero credit rating.

So off to plan B. Getting something cheap to runaround until I build up a credit score. Looked around on Craigslist, and the experience is very similar to Gumtree / OLX back home. There are allot of scams, mis-information etc. So ou have to sift out the garbage to get something decent. The budget was around 10k, and at that price point, you could get a very used SUV like Acura MDX, Lexus RX350, Honda CRV etc. or a really good, low mileage sedan Acura, Lexus. As much as I love my BM's, German cars are a big no no here, they can be had for bargains, however parts and services are waaay expensive. Considering my price point, most of the vehicles I was looking at were all high mileage. This ruled out American brands. (This might be overly cautious as there are plenty of old american SUVs on the road) So my search criteria was very narrow, Lexus, Toyota OR Acura, Honda. Lexus and Toyota are just overpriced, just like back home. Acura and Honda was more value for money, however the SO did not "like" the look of the CRV rear.

I was almost ready to throw in the towel, when I came across a diamond in the rough. I saw an ad on a Hyundai Santa Fe. From the pics it looked like a good clean vehicle, so I went out to see it. It drove well and was in great nick. The lady selling it was relocating to the west coast, so she wanted to get rid of it quickly. I was not looking for a Santa Fe, however, the price, condition and the features on the vehicle just made it a no brainer. Features - 3.3L V6 with good fuel economy, Navigation, SunRoof, dual climate, heated seats and best of all, 11 speaker Infinity Sound System (Oooh this sounds good, almost as good as my Jeep Grand Cherokee!)

I documented the detailing process and thought I would share that:

This was a few before pics, some I took at the sellers home before picking it up, and some at my place.

First up I set to tackle the headlights. I got myself the Meguiars headlight restore kit from Walmart, which has the 1000 & 3000 sanding discs, plastic polish, wool mop drill attachment & most importantly, the headlight sealant for UV protection.

Work in progress:

Then it was onto the paint. I taped up the sensitive rubber bits, as well as the pinstripe decals. I took some of my detailing products with like Polish, pads and wax. The machine polisher I bought off eBay for like $69.

Polish of choice - Menzerna FG400. Which worked beautifully on this paint.

Recruited a bit of help from a work collegue:

Good Job !!

I had a Sante Fe for 6 years. One of the best cars I've ever owned !

Car looks great, so does your neighbourhood. Colour me green.

north cackalacky? I’m so sorry!

Good job on the Santa Fe and it looks like you got a good clean suburb? What’s your rent on the house?

Cool Thanks guys ...

Did you mentioned the mileage and the price.
I did not ... sorry. Mileage - 150k miles, and I picked it up for $5.5k. So it came in way under budget.

Thanks. Rental is around $1.8k. Its a really nice burb, which is walking distance to the elementary school (about 1/2 a mile). Which is great, cos I don't have to drive home to fetch the kids.

Where in the US are you?

I'm in North Carolina, in the research triangle area.

What is your career? You know you gotta get into basketball being so close to Duke!

Just be careful of the racism, your brown so idiots will be a dick to you. Do not getting into a pissing contest on the road cause you never know who is carrying a gun.

If you want your neighbors to accept you, get into the local customs! You got 4th July coming up.

Also, one last piece of advice, respect the troops and veterans. Say anything negative and you may get chased out of town!

Maybe a discussion on a new topic ...

However these are my findings since being here:
Racism - I haven't experienced any especially in the triangle. I'm pretty sure there would some, as one ventures out into the "country". This place is very cosmopolitan. There are plenty of people of color, from all over the world (mainly india tbh). And most of the folk who stay here are people who relocated from the north.

Very happy to assimilate and take on new culture and customs. We fourth gen. SA Indian, so we have like zero ties with India and don't speak any languages, cept English & Afrikaans. I would say we more western, than the indians who have been here for over 20 years. They still seem to cling on to their roots and culture, while we happy to adapt and go with the flow.

People are very patriotic. I respect that. No need to be bad mouthing anyone's beliefs, or religion regardless of what I think. We are aliens on foreign land. Fit in or ***** off ...

Cool, what type of polisher are you using? The one Is the vibrating type, still not sure how effective it is.

The one I picked up is a Dual Action polisher 800w. Very suitable for home use, and especially recommended for anyone who has never picked up a polisher before. for eg. My colleague has never polished before, however he was super keen to go through the process. It just took him a few runs and he was good to go. IF the vibrating type polisher you are talking about is the yellow shield thingy from PnP then forget about it. Those things are useless.

That's the one, I should get myself a decent one at Addendorf.
