erm, how to pagebreak to make sure you dont have a IRQ CONFLICT.
very possible when installing ipcop distro on older machine, ...

took me a while to realize why ipcop wasnt seeing two nics on install, (ok i was using 2 identical nics so it was picking the same one up twice.

as in ..detecting network card..(1)..xyz....green network
ok, cool
red......... detecting network..........xyz ........(unset)..oops
erm ok lets check green ......detecting xyz..(unset) ... huh? wtf?

even noobs live and learn LOL :)

BTW, busy on this HOWTO right now - not sure how long it will take, have assembled my hardware, which is more or less the starting point of the HOWTO, just for a laugh, here's my kit :-

Chip + RAM: Pentium III, 128mb 133 SDRAM
CDROM: Dysan CD-332E
Video Card: Sis 6215 2mb
Hard Drive: 2gig Seagate Medialist Pro 2160 + Adaptec 2940 scsi card
Network Card: ISA Genius LAN 10/100
Network Card: SA YCL ??? - no name brand ? - 10/100
PSU: 200W ATX PSU

The aim of this operation is the exact opposite to the usual hardware posts, in that you need to find the crappiest oldest hardware that still works.
 
I have a 386 ? but will use a PII Amd 400mhz with onboard video and 2.1 gig hdd all packed into an old server psu. case
 
That type of thing is perfect GuRu - you just need to bung in 2 network cards and your good to go, although I do wonder where you got a PII AMD from :D
 
Dont know ? old pc i pulled out maybe PIII mb cant remember it is so old .. will have to put some fire in the wire and see what the bios tells me .

Hi, Also waiting eagerly.

Please run through what the firewall logs and IDS logs tell one.

Also cover one nic setup for dialup modems. Thats what I am using and it is great. Much more stable connection than modem into Win 2k box.

I would be happy to scan a draft for you.
 
Hi guys Ipcop is very nice! been using for a while now! the only thing I want to know is if there is a way i can limit certain users/ip's on my green network's bandwidth eg, User A gets 1gig UserB gets 2gigs etc? Any one have an idea please SHOUT!!!

I also took all the photos neccessary for the tutorial of the setup of IPCOP, with the intention of recreating them manually.

Not even sure if it'll be in chapters, if I ever complete it.

It's work in progress so early, If I ever do the HOWTO, it'll most likely be scrapped.

Whatever, wish I could remove this entire thread and pretend I never created it.
Heck, I'll do the next best thing and ingore it again ...
 
/me is using Smoothwall @ home and work... but will also have a look at IPCop should the need arise.

IMO it is a good idea to look (and use) a variety of firewalls, not just to stick to one.

I also think that people not wanting to dabble in Linux, should go with IPCop as it's got everything you'll need, but for those who want to pick up a bit of Linux skills should go with Smoothwall and add the various homebrew modifications as they require, before plunging into the deep end and try setting up a FreeBSD firewall... ;)
