Hi again

Thanks to all for voting in our previous poll. Here are the results from over 1600 votes:

Previous poll results

“Do you approve of Telkom's ADSL 3 Gig cap strategy?”

Yes: 7%
Uncertain: 3%
No: 89%

The results do not add up to 100%. The reason for this is that it is rounded to the nearest %. I think NO should be 90 :-))

Please vote in our latest poll to show whether Telkom's assumption that most ADSL users are happy is true or not.

rpm,

I'm a born pesimist and as such would like to ask if this voting system of yours will prevent duplicate votes. Just want to be sure that we are not fooling ourselves here, and that the data we gather is accurate.

Hi Merlin

I did set the poll not to accept duplicates, but I think there might be a loophole if you do not have cookies enabled. I will look for a better option, but these applications (add free) are hard to find.

It may be possible to duplicate but its a annoying pain in the butt to bother. Basically you have to find and delete a file, then re-vote...then repeat.

I prefer to use the fact that the media is on this and that Telkom saw fit to release some response, this can be seen as proof we are not so minority as Mr. White would like others to believe.

Whilst we're on this subject of Telkom's response. I do not believe that we are getting the right message out to the newspapers, or, they do not understand what we are saying.

Most of the articles i've read have all refered to our problem being that of the 3GB cap. That is not entirely true, at least from my perspective.

The topics i've read, those that made any sense and are devoid of emotional issues, have indictated that as a whole we are content with the 3GB cap. After all, we know what we signed for. It's futile to argue with Telkom about the validity or moral correctness of this cap. It's part of the deal we all signed. I would like to state that I am 'content' with the 3GB cap. I did not say 'happy' for obvious reasons.

So, my approach to the media would be to state that I am content with the cap as that is all that is on offer from ADSL at this point in time. It could be better, but we are glad to hear some solutions offered by Telkom in circumventing this issue by allowing multiple acounts. However, we would like Telkom to explain the following:

1) Does the 3GB cap achieve the goal of preventing the so-called 'abusers' from degrading the service?

In our experience it does not. For the first week or two, whilst the cap hasn't been exceeded, the 'abusers' are still doing exactly what they want and are 'degrading' the service. Now the problem is compounded even further by Telkom offering these 'abusers' a second account. Now they can carry on for the next week or 2 in doing exactly what they were doing and even longer by getting more accounts. Of course, Telkom makes more money, but it DOES NOTachieve the goal it's intended for. We would like Telkom to comment on this.

2) How does Telkom measure their clients in term of the cap? Was this made clear from the launch of the service?

Again we believe that Telkom have changed the rules. We have on file, e-mails sent from M-Web stating a different measurement, all traffic up OR down, and not the latest story from Telkom that states that it's the aggregate of both up AND down. We have e-mails from Telkom's offices where it initially stated the same as M-Web, only to be changed later to reflect the latest Telkom statement. We would like Telkom to respond to this.

3) How accurate is this measurement of Telkom?

Clearly from some of the post on this forum by knowledgable members, there are discrepancies in terms of Telkom's measurement and their own. Would Telkom care to explain this? Would Telkom submit their methodolgy to external auditors for analysis and verification?

4) What exactly happens when you exceed the cap?

Again, if we have to believe what Telkom says and what is stated by M-Web in their e-mail, it will be a little slower than a 64KB connection. Clearly, from the postings on this forum, this is not the case. International traffic comes to a virtual standstill. Would Telkom like to explain why this is the case?

This to my mind presents the problem in a different perspective and does not portray us as a bunch of 'whiners' who's not happy with the cap. It also provides focus on the real issues and does not become a moral issue but factual.

Hi Merlin

I agree fully. I think what has happened is that they visited the site and noticed the poll concerning the cap. They therefore assumed that was our main gripe. I tried to indicate in every article that speed is our main concern. Lets hope it surfaces in future media releases.

Merlin, I couldn't agree more. I am also not happy that the cap features so prominently. The cap as such is not the primary problem - it's something to work on for the future but afterall, there is nothing we can do about that. it was always advertised as that. That's why Telkom always likes to respond specifically to that gripe.

What IS a problem is that we are not getting what is advertised (virtually 0 intl bandwidth after cap) and the quality of the service offering is deteriorating (speed, network shaping). The changes that have been made to the way it is sold on their web site are testimony to that. Now it's suddenly about "always available" - considering the downtimes that is not quite true plus, if I remember correctly, it does not take ISDN all that much longer to connect.
I was somewhat pleased to hear the Telkom guy shoot himself in the foot on SAFM by explaining who Telkom thinks ADSL is for. The type of person he describes is the last one I'd advise to get ADSL in any country.

although adsl is a shared service still look at asia and austria also far from usa and europe but all there ppl dl at fast speeds from kazaa and other p2p w/o abusing or slowing the service down for other ppl why cant telkom just get a few more intl pipes or something seeing as most of the telkom directors get paid over a milion rand there surely should be enough money 2 lay down a few more intl pipes
