Greeting all

Purchased spares to service my wife's 2005 Polo 1.9TDi at the local Midas store this afternoon (1000 smackers later  ). Oke behind the counter gave me Shell Rimula R3X. Later, on closer inspection of the labeling, I only see pictures of heavy vehicles. The TDi may sound like a tractor at times, but I'm unsure if this oil will do the trick.

Replies, tips and general sarcasm welcomed.

Thanks and all

Donny

Don't the polo TDi's need those synthetic oils? (which cost a fortune)

I know pretty much nothing about them so just voicing what I can remember vaguely :p

Indeed. Donny, check whether the oil is VW 505.01 approved - if not, return it for an oil that is. Think the Shell Helix Ultra (grey / blue bottle, not sure) is OK, as well as most of the Castrol SLX Professional oils.

Dude what are you doing asking the guy at Midas what oil to use. Phone up VW, ask for parts department and ask them what oil to use. Repeat x3 with different VW's to make sure you got the right response.

The guys at Midas and Autozone rarely give the correct parts, I only buy by part number. The car manual should also provide some information.

Diesel engines usually use diesel oil which has more detergents so don't just go chucking anything in there.

VW has specified synthetic oil for all of the vehicles, even the citi Golf.
It is probably not 100% necessary, but it will be a lot cheaper than having an engine/turbo failure, especially when you consider the quality of our diesel..

After contacting VW and Shell, the correct oil is SAE 5 W40 (505.01 as mentioned earlier in the thread) at around R420/5L.

Ahhhh the joys of saving on fuel consumption in a diesel, then finding that you have to pay it all back in oil changes !! :p

The proper oil is Castrol Slx. Costs almost R80 a liter. Fully synthetic.

No ways, i paid R67 for 1 L of 505.01 TDI oil from the Audi dealership a few weeks ago. Shop around..
