Hi

I'm posting this in desperation and hope somebody can help me with my internet speed issue.

I'm currently on RAIN with a Huawei B618s-65d router and I hardly get anything from it. A good day means 0.2Mbps down and slightly more up and this is at any time of the day, peak and off peak.

This problem actually started just prior to the initial lockdown. At that time i had a Telkom LTE contract which ran fine for majority of the contract. Speeds that we achieved on that were on average 17Mbps download and and about 8Mbps upload. This suddenly dropped to between 0.2 - 0.5. We contacted Telkom and got told that they have a problem with a tower in the area and that they are working on getting the problem resolved. Then lockdown hit and the problem was still not resolved. We made contact again, and we were told that there is still a problem with the tower and that they cannot get onto the site where it is located due to the lockdown.

Eventually Telkom contacted us, and told us that the problem has been resolved and asked if we still had connectivity problems, which we did. they gave us alternate APN settings to try but this didnt help any. playing around with the settings on the router, we actually found that forcing it onto 3G instead of LTE actually gave us better speeds. it wasnt anything fantastic, but it allowed us to at least semi function.

During this time the contract had run its full term, and we heard from neighbors who are on RAIN that they were happy with the service so we decided to cancel with Telkom and go with RAIN. Much to our frustration we were even worse off on RAIN. We have logged a ticket, but support has been very lacking. In desperation we've tried a lot of things to remedy the problem including:

  • Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigured
  • Upgraded the firmware on the router
  • moved the router around the house to where we got the best signal. We noticed that no matter where we place the router it fluctuates between one bar of signal to full signal then back to one bar and so on.
  • Tried 2 other routers (one was a B315. cant remember the model of the other)
  • Forced our router to run on 2600MHz band through a tool that we downloaded from here. This resulted in no signal at all
We've also put the sim into a phone and drove around the neighborhood running speed tests. The results we got weren't fantastic, but were far far better than what we get at home (Between 4 and 6 Mbps down) and as much as that is poor by today's standards, we'd be more than happy with that. to give you an idea of how bad it gets, sometimes we can't even send and receive voicenotes on Whatsapp.

Last week, for a brief period we notice that our connection didn't look too bad, so we ran a speed test and saw that we are getting 8.08 down and 0.68 up. after about an hour it dropped to 4.3 down and 3.09 up. Since then its been so bad that we can't even run speed tests because the page won't load.

Something else that we noticed is that everybody that comes to our house complains of bad signal, doesn't matter what provider they are on. It's not as bad as what we have on RAIN and had on Telkom, but there is obviously a big enough reduction for them to notice. I don't know if this will give more insight, but i thought i'd mention it anyway, but we also struggle to tune into radio stations as well. The strange thing is that several of my neighbors are on RAIN and they dont have these issues

We don't have Fiber in our area yet. The ADSL is only a 2Mbps connection, and we don't have visibility to any High sites for a Microwave connection so we really dont have other options available to us. We've been told to try external antennas, but we have no idea what to get, where to get it, and also don't want to spend that money at the risk that it won't improve at all.

Sorry for the lengthy post but i thought the more info that i can give to the experts on here, the more informed the advice would be. We just can't wrap our head around this. How did we go from 17Mbps down to what we have now. It's like we're suddenly in the Bermuda Triangle. I really really really hope that somebody can help here.

Thanks in advance

Same issue here.. Due to my location I only have access to 1 tower, 200 metres away from me, even if I were to use antennas.

Went from constantly 20-30mbps to mostly under 2mbps in a matter of a few weeks. By lunch time it's usually unusable (same 0,2mbps) then I have to switch over to my Afrihost MTN LTE, which gives me 100mbps, but not uncapped sadly. We're not the heaviest users, but I like the peace of mind of not having to be guilty for blowing data every time I watch a youtube video, which is why it would've been great it Rain worked properly all the time.

It have its better days occasionally where it surprises us when it doesn't go as slow as 0.2mbps and I can still do basic browsing / coding... but overall, the tower is extremely oversold and there's nothing I can do + nothing Rain is willing to do to improve it.

After months of struggling with this connection sooooo much, I eventually got the neighbourhood together and put some effort in bringing fibre here... Looks like it's on the horizon in the near future. :)

@Asking For a Friend, Have you taken you router to your neighbors house to see if there is a difference in signal and speed?
Also just for interest sake which province and suburb you in. The reason i ask is that i noticed a lot of friends that i have who live in Kzn are experiencing connectivity and speed issues.
The package you are on also effects your speed. If you are on rain 4G uncapped don't expect speeds over 10mb as the speed is capped. Your neighbors could be on the R250 package which is not capped and that does make a difference

Hi, no we haven't tried that yet. Aaaand we are in KZN, in Astra Park, a suburb of Winkelspruit/Amanzimtoti

Hi Asking For a Friend

May i ask you to please PM your email address linked to your rain account so that i can get someone to take a look and assist you with the issue you are facing.

Hi, no we haven't tried that yet. Aaaand we are in KZN, in Astra Park, a suburb of Winkelspruit/Amanzimtoti
Could you post some stats on the signal you receiving. If it is weak you need to log into your Rain account and check which tower your Router is connecting to. Once you have the general direction the Tower is in you can try and optimize the location of your router based on that

I emailed Rain about downgrading my package ages ago and because they don't respect anyone enough to even respond...I am just cancelling the subscription altogether... If you're considering using this service, well good luck! Spoiler alert...you're never going to be able to use it for much

Hey. Same problem here. No fibre in area. Came from Telkom LTE which was terrible, then I went with the Rain 4G service to the 5G (R699) service. Honestly, I'm just paying more for poor service. During the day it runs full speed (when I'm at work). When I want to use it at home after 6pm, speeds tank.

I also want the peace of mind of uncapped, but it is of no use if I cannot even stream a video without buffering or play a online game without getting disconnected every 5 minutes.

I've contacted rain support, if no solution presents itself this week, I'm going to have to cancel. Vote with your wallet. Only problem is which poor service to try next, as they all seem to be bad.

The rep here actually passes on information and speeds things along. Maybe giving some decent info about your problem might help instead.
Just my 5cents
