OK, so apparently my D-Link 2640U has confidence issues when it comes to braving Jo'burg thunderstorms...

Do I replace it with:
  1. a D-Link DSL-2650U, or
  2. a Netgear DG834GV
???????

It's purely for home use, with no more than 6 devices (mix of wired and WiFi) connected at any one time. I do a bit of Xbox LIVE gaming on the side.

I've been cut off from the outside world at home since last week Thursday, so I want to order the replacement today. Your learned inputs will be much appreciated...

Historically I have had less issues with Netgear over D-Link and I sell many dsl modems a month,

Why do people insist on buying Netgear consumer products with their buggy firmwares and bloated software?

I've said it before - their corporate products are fine, but their consumer products stink.

I agree about the buggy firmware. I bought a Netgear DG834GT wireless router years ago - initially it worked great. All the firmware versions up to 1.02.16 were fine but all subsquent firmware releases have been rubbish. DHCP problems for devices on the LAN, buggy WPA security etc.

What's even more frustrating is that these issues are well reported online via several sources including the Netgear forums (also see the responses on my blog for version 1.02.19 and 1.03.22), yet every time they release new firmware, they add new features but almost never fix the problems identified in the previous versions.
I used to be a Netgear fan but shoddy firmware means I'll be buying a different brand next time.

+1
I have no love for Netgear. A few years back I bought 3 wifi-pci cards and all three of them were rubbish. Could not get a stable connection on one of them in Windows or in Linux.
Netgear will never see my business again.
