popcorn hour

I see you need an app running on your remote machine to stream to the Popcorn. so I guess a NAS or linux server box are out of the question?

You get some NAS devices that has this media server already built in. The QNAP for example.
I don't know if the Qnap is available in SA yet though.

I mailed them for a cost. R2146 if you go through the official site ($215 + $50 shipping, customs will probably be extra)

Wonder what the local cost is. R3000 and up I'm guessing...

This does seem the one to go for: replace Xbox1/xbmc, move all torrent activity to a little black box with HDMI, 1080p and a friendly ui. Sounds like a much better deal than the Mnet HD Decoder, of hoe?

Popcorn Hour Model A110 now avaialble

Popcorn Hour A110 are now available pre-order at R2,500 from hum.co.za

I recently bought a Popcorn hour from www.compafrica.co.za and it was easy and fast. Two thumbs up to the guys there. Available in stock, shipped overnight to your work/home and plug in and go. R 2799 incl VAT. It is obvious that they taking it serious to compete with other brands and the effort of the investment into the brand etc etc

A-110 supports S-ATA/2 and tested up to 1.5TB drives. It supports windows connect, and a whole bunch of other protocols, so all shared media on your network is detected at plug in. No need for any software to run on the serving pc. Since then I've not used my HTPC in fact im going to take it apart and re-assemble it as a download/file server instead.

Amazing little box this Popcorn hour.

I have not used the MVIX so I cannot compare it, but all I can say is since I got the A-110 i've watched more backlog of series' and movies ever since I built my first HTPC seven years ago. It makes things ALOT easier.

iv had both mvix 760 and the new popcorn hr, popconr is way better in my opinion! way better! go straight to buy the popcorn dont go and even look at the mvix...

Does your PC have a remote control and a cool, simple to use GUI? ;)

Yes. MCE Remote & Media Portal installed. Media Portal updates all movie and tv series info from the internet. Posters, imdb info etc. Nothing else comes close to it.

... assuming, of course that PC and TV live close to each other.....

Media portal installed on a HTPC is an excellent option, however compared to media streamers like the Popcorn Hour they are in completely different leagues especially when it comes to price.

Edit: Oh and the PCH also has a plug-in called 'Yet Another Movie Jukebox' that updates all metadata and cover art off the internet.

An HTPC works out a lot cheaper than a device like this. You can buy a secondhand small form factor pc for about R1500. For that you get a lot more functionality compared to a standalone device.

I'd like to see a secondhand small form factor pc decode high bitrate 1080p videos seamlessly, especially one that costs R1500 :D I would say you're looking at closer to R6000 (New)
