An ode to my modem.

Oh where would I be with out thy old modem,
With you by my side I can tap into the wireless spectrum.
You deliver my music, movies and porn
If only you'd work during a midsummer rain storm!
And online gaming is at its best this way
On a slightly overcast day, in screen shots is how I play
but I wont let you go, in my life you must stay
because without the interwebs, I wouldn't last a day.

I'm using a MikroTik RouterBoard RB433. I have my local gigabit LAN on one ethernet port, an iBurst desktop modem on another and a 2.4GHz radio providing wi-fi. It is rock solid.

For storage I built up a server from parts and four new 1TB S-ATA drives, it boots [-]FreeNAS[/-] NAS4Free from an old 128MB CompactFlash card on a CF-to-IDE adapter. The four 1TB drives are ZFS formatted in raidz configuration.

I have an old celeron with 40Gb ATA-100, 768Mb RAM and running Gentoo, load balancing 2 modems with a seperate AP for wifi.
