Hi.

I am having an issue with my network connection on a fresh install of XP SP2.
For some reason every 10 minutes or so my port 80/8080 drops and I have to click repair on the network connection. It is only this port that drops regardless of browser. Everything else works such as email, skype, etc ... just not websites.

I found this guy back in 2004 who had the same problem but no solution was posted:

Any ideas?

Regards

Can't find a specific solution, so the usual: update drivers, disable AV/firewalls, try a different network card, install SP3?

Perhaps try telnet port 80 of the affected system from another computer on the network, if it connects there might be some other program using the port...

Firewalls disabled ... drivers are the latest ... don't have another network card :( ... scared of SP3 :P ... is it stable .... I'm not trusting

How do I telnet it from another PC? We can ping IP's no problem ... not sure how to telnet a port though.

Have you tried a different browser?
Yebo ... and its two computers affected, not just one

Definitely use SP3 - its been out long enough and fixes a lot of problems.

Run a "telnet server 80"

If the connection is successful then you know its not a networking problem but rather a browser problem. What are you connecting to when your connection drops? YOu sure its not your internet connection that is dropping?

100% there are a lot of people on the internet connection and they all browse fine. Also, its on 2 PC's with windows off the same disc and is browser independant ... me thinks windows something. I'll try out SP3 tomorrow ... wish me luck :p

Haven't had a single prob with SP3, touch wood :D.

Try netstat -o. It will tell you which application has the port open, along with its PID. Then use Task manager to find the application and kill it....

Better yet download TCPView from Sysinternals.com (the best site in the known universe:)), and find and kill the process there. It gives you a near realtime (1 second) view of open ports, and activity:

Just curious - why disable the Windows firewall when it only blocks incoming connections?

Not yet ... but haven't had a chance today.

Disabled it because it was paining us with the sharing on the network.

Any ideas?
Who is your provider?

Port 80 is almost always redirected to a transparent cache device that is specifically designed to carry http traffic. Trying to run any kind of other traffic over port 80 is simply a bad idea.

Try changing to another port and tell us if you still have the problem.

Why are you using port 80 anyway??
