Port Forwarding For Xbox Live 360

My son wants to play with his XBox 360 online
Apparantly I need to allow "Port Forwarding" on the following ports: 53,80,88,1863,3074

What are the negative consequences of doing this?

I realise that I'm not really answering your question, but why do you want to port forward? The simplest way is to enable DHCP on your router, set everything to auto on the Xbox, then just plug it into the router.

When my son tests the connection to the Internet, the tests are reported as "passed". The Xbox then starts downloading updates and continually fails

If Mweb then make sure you disable the firewall for your connection.

Can't think that the Xbox 360 needs to have port forwarding configured to do updates. But if so only open ports UDP 88, UDP 3074, TCP 3074 according to:

Does it sign in to his Live profile? If it does then maybe try again later as failed downloads do sometimes happen.

He can log into his profile.
The failed downloads have been going on for some weeks

Enable UPNP on your router and DHCP on the xbox. The xbox will then dynamically ask your router to forward ports to it.

Or. Just put the IP of the xbox in the DMZ on the router (set static IP on xbox). I'm sure there are security concerns here but this will make it work (I think).
