Good day

Could someone please help me with port forwarding. My ISP is Herotel and I have requested a public IP. Not really sure what to fill in or even if this is the right setup.

I have the router that they give when signing up.

External IP = Public IP they gave you
External start port= what do you want to port forward, i.e. https would be 443, smtp would be 25
Ex end port = provides a range if you want,
if you just wanted to do port 443 / https start and end would be 443
Server IP = your internal IP address of the server or device you want to port forward
source port = port the server listens on, so 443 for https

The reason you have the option is you could have port 12345 on external and translate that to port 443 on the inside if you wanted to

A port forward will forward a connection from a public IP to your internal network.

So if you have a internal server with IP of say 192.168.1.5 listening on TCP-443, your router will have a public IP and you can then setup a rule to say forward port <public IP> on port X to 192.168.1.5 on 443

What is it you are trying to accomplish? What device do you have internally that you want to expose to the internet, and are you sure you want to do that. (accepting all the security risks etc)

I just want to host some dedicated servers for some of the games that I play. Thought just by turning on UPnP would achieve that, but still couldnt connect.

I tried the port checker, but port showed closed.

As greg said, you are exposing this server to the internet and it is likely to be scanned and attempts made to compromise it.
If your router supports a DMZ (which is creating a second separated network) I would suggest putting that server in there so that it is separate to your internal network and any IoT devices like cameras etc you may have.
Make sure the server is hardened, has strong passwords etc

What happened to the good old days where you could port forward on the router and bam, hosted.

Or was I under misconception?

Apparently I need to contact my ISP and ask them for the specific ports. But the problem I have is that I want to host different games at different times, asking them the whole time feels like a schlep.

What would the easiest solution be?

This does not sound like standard procedure if they provide you with your own static IP. Typically all ports , i.e. everything for that IP address is sent to you without filtering. This ISP could be unique, but it sounds like an admin headache for them, which most ISP's avoid.
