Guys,

I have about three months left on my vcom contract.

I would like to port my number to a new network, but not willing to cancel my contract, as I get a great total of R 88 discount when cancelling, which doesn't make it worth my while.

So my question, can I port my number to a new network, while still in contract, I'm of course still going to pay the contract until it expires? Maybe Vcom can then give me a new number on current contract?

What are the rules, tricks?

Nope they wont release it till your contract has run its 24 month period. Best once that happens is to cancel and convert to prepaid then port it across.

Yeah just mail Vodacom and ask them to convert to prepaid once contract expires and then port away

Ockie,

That is exactly what I want, how can I go about doing this?

I asked every Vodashop in Bloem, they all tell me it can't be done?

You need to have the port submitted at the new network

What VodacomData said. The process of assigning a substitute number onto your contract is a automatic process. Once the port process is complete and you give a Vodacom Shop your cell number, the system will come up with the substitute number.

Ockie / Vodacomdata,

Today I've tried to port a number (which is currently on a Top-up contract under my business account with Vodacom) to Cell C, but received a sms from Vodacom telling me that the port was declined due to the number being on an incorrect contract type.

Is it possible to port a number that's associated with a top-up contract to another network? Or is this problem due to the number being under a business account?

I don't want to cancel the top-up contract, just want to get a new number for it and port the current number to Cell C.

I am not familiar with the systems that other providers use...but on ours you need to make sure to select the correct account type ie prepaid, contract or corporate. Select the wrong one and it will be rejected. If you select the correct account type but enter wrong details like wrong ID number or company reg number, it will be rejected.

Hi VodacomData,

Thank you but I've got this sorted today.

The number in question was ported out on Wednesday and after talking to several clowns in the call-centre, I've managed to get a new number assigned to the existing contract and was told that everything will be active within 24 hours.

So this afternoon I phoned again, spoke to several clowns in the call-centre, before being transferred to Dylan (porting department) who assisted to get the sim card and related services active under the new number.

So a big thank you to you, Ockie and Dylan - you guys sure know your stuff! :)

Hi there

I have a similar dilemma.
I have a corporate contract (Voda Talk 350) which is only a few months into its new 24 month cycle (contract renewed in December).

I'm leaving the company as at the end of March and will be handing the phone back to them to reallocate to another staff member. This implies that I would lose the cell number I've used for years. I'd ideally like to keep the number and port across to another contract that suits my needs (not certain on network operator as yet). The company have agreed to support if it possible.

The Vodacom key accounts manager says that they cannot port my number to prepaid and reallocate a new cell number to the contract for the company to continue using. My options are as follows if I want to keep my number: 1) premature contract cancellation - which is a large penalty for me to bear; or 2) I take over the contract in my personal capacity. The latter is not ideal because it's overkill for my purpose.

Is this legit (i.e. it can't be done) or simply another case of "it won't be done" (i.e. you're wasting my time, don't make your problem mine)?

I'd greatly appreciate your feedback.

Regards,

You have 3 options.

1. Do a transfer of ownership of the line into your personal name.
2. Get permission from the company to port out the number to whoever you want. Vodacom will assign a port out substiture number an dthe contract will continue as normal. The company may then do a sim swop on the new substiute number to continue using the contract with a new staff member etc.
3. Do a tariff migration first and discuss with the company if they will bear the costs of this ... once that bill run has finished then do the transfer of ownership.

Thanks Ockie

I would ideally like to do option 2..

I've just chatted to the key account manager now and she now says that they can reallocate the contract a new cell number, but my existing number will be lost?? This doesn't make sense to me.
Apparently something to do with ICASA and needing numbers to go into holding bay for 6 months.

Thanks Ockie

Dont know what she is talking about. When you port a Vodacom SP number to another SP or network then our system allocates a substiture number to that contract automatically.

When we convert a number from contract to prepaid then it needs to remain on prepaid for 6 months before it can be converted back to conract.....but that has no relevance to your case as far as I cant tell.

That's what I thought..

But I get the feeling that as consumers we're being bullied into believing that this kind of nonsense because a person of "authority"
simply says it's so. Clearly a case of not wanting to lose customers.

I've tried to search for the Vodacom Porting dept number but it seems to be undisclosed. Ockie, do you by any chance have a number that I can call?

Rgds,
Dylan

Get permission from contract holder to port number out to another provider if that is what you want. When the port goes through, Vodacom will assign a new number to the contract and keep billing active. The contract holder may then decide to do a sim swop on that new number to continue using it, or do a premature cancellation and pay the fees.

You must make sure to give the correct details to the MNO that you want to port to. If the details are wrong, the request will be rejected.

Thanks,
I got a signed letter from my company granting permission for the number porting.
I want to port my number to a pay as you go (will stay with Vodacom) and asked them to allocate a new number to the contract.
My company will continue with the contract as the phone will probably be allocated to somebody else.
I have been retrenched and am running out of time.
This has been ongoing for three weeks.
I have had no luck at the Vodacom outlets. Just get told it is not possible.
Whats my next step?
Thanks
Regards.

That is not possible. I know it makes no sense, but only way to get a new number assigned to keep using the contract while you still keep the old number is to port out.

The other two options are:
1. Transfer of ownership where you keep the number and take over the contract. (you need to apply with supporting docs)
2. Do premature cancellation if it is still in contract, pay the fee and keep then number on prepaid.
