Can anyone please comment on the recording ability (specifically regarding fidelity and sensitivity) of common entry-level portable MP3 players?

I'm looking at a Sony NWZ-B142 but I'm open to other models in a similar price range.

MP3 recording capability

Doubt if this one can record in MP3 format - voice recording is often poor quality, or proprietary. Other Sony models do MP3 recording. I have tested the ICD-UX71 Digital Voice Recorder which sells for about R900 - it does the MP3 recording from either built-in mic, external mic or line-in rather well, in stereo.

Manual of this product (NWZ-B142) not clear either - recording appears to be limited to recording from built-in mono mic

Don't need an external mic; rather just need something portable, quick and easy to use, that has decent fidelity (can hear and comprehend conversations). I'm not worried about the recording format either.
