Would anyone know of its possible to replace the number of a existing Telkom Mobile contract with a different number once the contract has started.

I want to get a Telkom contract now but want to port my Vodacom number to the contract once it expires in 3 months time?

Not possible and as far as I know its not possible on any of the networks. Rather wait the 3 months out or live with the new number.

Cellc do it.

I started my contract with Cellc then ported my number from MTN once it was on prepaid to my Cellc contract. Cellc just called it a number change if I remember correctly

I think subject line is wrong. It doesn't matter it is prepaid or not. You have two options:

1. Wait till contract expire and port afterwards to existing TM contract (will work, but not recommended).
2. Port now at the time of signing contract, TM agent will be motivated to assist you. How technically it happen? Vodacom will have to assign new number to your existing contract, it will free your number for porting. You can either ask Vodacom to convert your existing number to prepaid SIM and then port this number, or let TM agent to request direct porting. Cell C will do it directly by contacting Vodacom, I don't know about TM.

Thanks, valuable information. I confirmed with the TM shop this morning that this can indeed be done.

Porting has certainly opened lots of doors.

Sadly also for criminals stealing numbers....

Anyways so you can get a telkom mobile contract and get a new 081 or 061 number and then port from another network to that contract? I know for a fact that you can do it with telkom mobilke prepaid but not sure about contract.
