So yesterday I ported my MTN prepaid to TM. I sent a porting SMS as instructed by the starter pack. The MTN SIM is still active though - do I have to switch on the TM SIM and leave it on until it takes over? Or do I leave it off until the MTN SIM goes inactive?

you will need to wait for your MTN sim to show no network, this is the sign that the port has been successful.

i found this easier to have gone with my mtn fone to a telkom store, they do the port for you right there, got an sms, confirmed the OTP and the port was done the next day.

That's what I figured...

...and this is what I did last time - I just couldn't remember how long it took. I will let it go till the end of today I suppose.

I did my port at around 6pm the evening and it went active at around 2 the next day

Just remeber ports are not done on weekends and public holidays

Well, given that yesterday was a pubic holiday, the 18h00 to 14h00 may be a bit much to expect but I can say the following:

13h43
SIM purchased and RICA done
14h04
SMS (PORTME#MYIDNO#20DIGITSIMNO) sent to 081 160 PORT (7678)
and reply received with a reference number in seconds
14h06
Message from MTN asking me to confirm port by replying with the number 1. Reply send, nothing happened since.

...and this is my concern. With MTN, I often have to restart my phone just to use my available balance. Just this week when I tried to make a call I got told I had insufficient airtime. I have called and bitched and moaned with MTN about this for months. So yesterday I figured letting them go would be the only real solution. I just hope my reply went through without this insufficient airtime error.

So with MTN did u read the sms properly. If i remember correctly the sms stated to reply if you want to stop the port...

LOL! Here it is:

Alert! MTN has received a Port Out Request for this number. You will lose all airtime/bundles/SMSs. To proceed reply "1" to this SMS within 30 minutes.

I replied 1 to proceed. But you did make me look...:D

Hate to say it but MTN Tricked you. To proceed means you proceed on MTN. If you reply to the SMS your port request gets cancelled.....

DO NOT REPLY to the SMS or MTN will decline your port!!!!!!!

You should start the process again.

Me too. I was told to reply within 30min if it was not me to cancel the port. Now they changed the SMS to trick people in staying with them.

Sneaky!!!

Very sneaky! gregory just start the port again this time just dont reply to the sms from mtn

i'm not even getting a vodacom port sms.

Went to a Telkom Store on saturday at about 4ish. No sms so unable to port, go to another one on Sunday - same issue. No sms from vodacom.

Popped into one on Monday afternoon, same issue. no sms, this time they just gave me a telkom sim and said to try again.

Tried tuesdya night and STILL no sms from vodacom to allow me to port.

Does porting only work during weekdays and working hours?
