100% My old man only used olive oil, garlic, salt, lemon juice and maybe a little honey. We used to also put 2-3 devil's chillies against the breast bone of the chicken.

Having just returned from Portugal I never really saw the Portuguese food there that we get here. I was looking forward to espetadas and trinchado but I never saw it on a menu.

Peri Peri Chicken is basically chicken braaid with some sauce that is not really peri peri, you get the peri peri on the side.

Roast pork with sauce over chips you get everywhere, but the best meals by far were the braaid sardines with chips and salad, those are tasty.

I also got 7 lamb chops and chips at a small restaurant in Loule, a small town on the Algarve for 6.50 Euros that were delicious. A bottle of Vinho Verde (Green wine) for 7.50 Euros made me miss the bus as I had two bottles. :)

Papseqs ( ignore spelling ).

We have a house in the mountains in central Portugal. It's so rural that you can hang a plastic bag outside for the local baker to pass with money and he will fill it with a dozen rolls or whatever you need. I remember because we only go over so often, the one year we paid short and he just wrote on the note how much and we left the balance with the next "order".

Foods to have in Portugal:

Roast pork - not chops, proper steaks, roast
Laitoa - suckling pig
Steak eggs and chips - common diet but expensive due to red meat.
Lulas - calamari legs
Lulas com tinta - calamari legs but with ink in the mix
Sardinhas - roasted sardines over a fire
Bacayao - salted codfish ( personally hate it but a regional delicacy )

And the basic staples : coffee , home made wines , presunto, chorizo. I also love the cheeses, hard and soft.

Custard tarts are a big thing in Portugal, especially in Lisbon. You can buy it everywhere and there is a shop in Belem where the people queue in the road to buy it. I had it there and it was delicious.

And at the restaurants you get homemade chips not the pre-cut stuff that you get here in some restaurants.

Buying salamis, sausages, hams and cheeses with some fresh breads from the supermercado and then going to make your own lunch at a park or at the side of the road is awesome and cheap.

Pastais Nata - literally wet pastries.
