Possibilities on 100MBPS fibre

I think the real thing at the end of the day for all of us is that at least we can obtain the speed without fear of theft or have weather knock out the line or you're too far away from getting the best speed possible. For me, though I don't have a fibre connection yet, I look forward in seeing fewer problems over line degradation that most of us face on a ADSL/VDSL connection. Yea, sure 100mb connection would be a dream come true for me since I've always wanted to be able to share with the world of video Gamers and Technology readers/listeners my own view via a proper video instead of writing a long essay of how much I dread most technology. But now when I get access to fibre I'd be able to stream/upload video's to YouTube in a good amount of time.

So for me, I can't wait to get rid of the dreaded SNR ratio's and all the trouble shooting around that. I understand this might have been a little off topic but when I read people comparing or asking what connection speed they have, all I think is how long most of us that stay just out of reach for vdsl and too far away for a 10mb connection and we just make a 4mb. Cause all the people in my shoes know the pain I speak of.

Sabotage will still bring down equipment. Sure there is no value to fibre if someone tries to sell it, but sabotage is still a real issue. Weather is still a factor that can influence fibre (Imagine lightning hits the ONT - You will have to wait till the provider gets out to replace the now broken ONT).

Much less chance of the ont getting hit, compared to a copper connected device.

Sabotage really isn't a killer on fibre because of how relatively easy it is to pickup where the fault lies where as if the same happened on a ADSl copper line it would take months to figure out where the fault starts. and like @Sinbad said, the chances of lightning smacking the ONT for fibre are a lot lower than what the chances of it hitting the ADSL copper ONT.

I share my 100Mbps FTTH connection with 4 housemates and it works exceptionally well in many scenarios.

I upload a LOT of data between my backups and drone footage to Google Drive and the 50Mbps upload speed (Telkom FTTH) allows me to do so without impacting on their streaming, gaming or general internet usage. We are all able to stream/watch Youtube/Netflix/Plex/Showmax simultaneously without any of the others noticing. Same goes for downloading Ubuntu distros all day long (if you know what I mean).

I have also opted out of getting a Telkom number and instead have a VoIP phone with a free VoIP number from MWEB (Hardly ever use it, mostly for inbound) and the quality is superb.

100Mbps is enough for our usage case. Sure we could probably go down to 40Mbps but for a 60Mbps drop in speed and a 30Mbps+ drop in upload speed, I'd much rather pay the extra and stay on 100Mbps. It costs us R1250/month for the line + 800GB of data (with Afrihost 18 hours free usage, it's impossible to use it all anyway), which we split 5 ways so R250 each!

Telkom is installing Fibre in our area, and should be live soon! Can't wait.

Multiple users is why I will go for Fibre once its available in my area- 2 adults + 2 teens does tend to lead to a bit of contention at the moment.

You can always post your speedtest and watch others drool, that is another possibility

@znh

Could you please do a speedtest to LA / San Francisco and London?

I have 20Mbps VDSL which runs at line speed local - but when going to those sites it is a miracle to get above 10Mbps - ave 6

Thanks

I think the test to San Francisco is hampered by ping and MTU sizes, so you'd need to use two or three threads to get 100 meg consistently

Thanks - Yeah, San Fran is basically as far away from us as it gets. No direct cable and it routes through London.
