Last night after 24:00 our outside beam went off and the security showed up and walked around our house to see if everything is okay.

Then about an hour later the outside beam on the opposite side of the house also went off. Again the security came out to check that everything is fine.

Both times nothing were found and it wouldn't be easy for somebody to get out of the yard as the house is surrounded by a 1.2m wall and then on top of the wall is 1.5m palasades.

Is there anything else we can do to protect ourselves from scum trying to get into our home. I don't want a gun, but at the moment I am looking at the application process.

check for ants on the wall around the beams as they can also trigger the beams if they get on or in the beam housing.

Outside beams are very unreliable unless they consist of multiple beams where at least two need to be broken to trigger an alarm.

A popular deterrent is to have stones around the house as its nearly impossible to walk on them without making a noise, even if you throw a heavy blanket over them

Thanks will do.

But is it really possible for ants to get into one beam and it goes off. Then an hour later on the complete opposite side of the house ants go in the other beam.

Do you know how they would have got into the property in the first place? You have electric fencing etc?

Also check for or listen for any large rats. We had a similar problem a few times and eventually discovered a large rat whose route went across both sides of our house.

We have also had cats set off the beam, hadedahs during the day.

It is also well known that potential thieves do sometimes set of the alarm constantly hoping you will get gatvol thinking it is a fault and turn off the alarm

In order to set the alarm off on two different beams they'd have had to have access to your property already. Unlikely they'd have stuck around for a second time. Our community precinct have been known to shoot to kill...

I've heard that the best safety measures are lights, gravel and dogs inside the house.

We have a palisade fence, electric fence, gravel and dogs. Alarm and motion sensors are never on...
They broke in by breaking the palisade fence then breaking the gate motor in its m0er in. Even closed the gate nicely behind them when they left
We also have security patrolling the area and they usually stand watch in our street but when they get called out the criminals strike. So most likely someone on the other side of the suburb causes some disturbance to get the security to come out and then they break in as soon as everyone is at the other scene...

These work very well if you can get hold of them. They can be a bit pricey at times and I know some will frown at the use of them but in our current times and with crime levels being where they are its becoming more and more acceptable nowadays.

As said, they can be pricey at times but prices will start coming down, eventually, and remember, you get what you pay for. Beware of second hand ones imported from Angola, Mozambique and some other Africa nations. These have usually been in the ground for extended periods and their reliability is not that good and they usually do not come with a money back guarantee as with the newer ones imported from Eastern Europe.

A word of warning though:

* Kids may no longer play on the lawn and try and keep pets off the lawn as well.

* Please do inform your gardener and or garden service about the recent installations. We have had several complaints in the past especially from garden service companies in regards to installations done by us.

* Where possible try and avoid installing these anywhere close to your front door, garage entrance, driveway and please also the area surrounding your post box.

* Please take note that you might have some complaints from neighbors about noise, especially when these are set off in the early hours of the morning. Just assure your neighbors that's it for their benefit as well.

* We know that they work great on the pavements, especially in those areas where you do not want people to park. We however recommend that you rather just put up a sign.

They tend to try and build a nest inside and this messes with the electronics.

Properly installed electric fence, neighbourhood watch radio, good lighting, gravel area around house, dogs inside and out, proper security doors and stuff in front of windows (remember smoke alarms to wake one early if there is a fire) is all I can recommend

These "wall jumpers" can be very agile.

Where can I get a quote ;)

Why gravel though ? Throw gravel all over the grass to hear anyone walking ?

No, it depends on your situation.

You can make a 1,5m gravel area all around the walls house for example, if you can't, you cant.

We have gravel area in front of yard which is used for alternate parking. One either has to walk over the gravel or on the driveway if coming from the front of our yard. If on driveway outside dogs will see you and bark, if walking on gravel, outside dogs will hear you and go and bark.

If you have inside dogs if will help them more easily hear anyone sneaking around outside and you might also hear it.

Anyway, of my list if would be the last one to put in effect.

A good mate of mine is a magistrate and the gravel is known as one of the best deterrents you get for opportunist crimes. Slap in a dog sleeping indoors and its even better.

My wife even placed a wind chime near the kitchen door that will always make a noise when the door is open.
