I recently got a 8600GT, did not buy the card, got it from someone else.

My current machine is a AMD 3000+ socket 939 with 1 gig RAM, slightly overclocked (running at about 1.9Ghz).

Will the CPU hinder the performance of the card (for gaming)? by how much?

I did not really plan a upgrade, so dont really want to spend a lot of money, but also dont want the card to go to waste.

Will it be worthwhile to get a better 939 CPU? Anybody have one lying around?

Or should I just look at going the whole way (MB, CPU and memory)?

Yes your card will perform better with a faster CPU, but only with minimal increase..your 8600 card is very similar to the 7600 series in terms of performance and believe me I went from Sempron 2800 to Dual Core 3600 with not much of a difference. Rather spend the cash on extra memory.

The 939 chips are pretty cheap now, if you wanted to upgrade to a 3800+ X2 chip it wouldn't be a bad idea. Good for general use any way.

2GB RAM might be a better choice though, but i wouldn't waste the money on a whole new setup.

That's what I thought too.

Rather spend money on usefull stuff like more/better memory and bigger/faster HDD.

If anyone wants to give me a old 939 CPU, I wont fight you :)

i doubt your cpu is holding that crappy card back eh

might be wrong though, its not crappy just nvidia is taking a chance

your cpu will be fine

wonderbob i have an old 3000+ 939 cpu i'll let go for 250 bucks

its hardly been used, i bought it for a client and they somehow ripped the fan off the mobo and the socket was broken was replaced with am2 so its istting here doing nothing :)

shouldn't be too much of a problem there are benches on the net where a 7600GT out performs the 8600GT. RAM would be a better spend than a new CPU.

That's exactly what I have, so except if you know how to combine them and make me a dual-core, I'm gonna have to pass on your offer :)

I dont really care whether the card is crappy or not, or whether the 7600GT outperforms it, becasuse it was free !!!! :)

It def outperforms my 6600GT, gives me close to 5000 more points on 3DMARK03.

There 939 X2 chips are expensive from my suppliers because they are not made anymore and didnt get a pricecut like the AM2s

Ja, I was thinking about this, but those chips are really cheap second hand, especially seeing as they are worth even less new now.

Even when I wanted to buy a 939 chip a few months ago the suppliers hardly had any 939 Dual cores.

btw guys check a couple more benchamrks on the 8600GT than just the one where the 7600GT beats it in one game.

It beat a 7900GT in one or two very new games, and DX10 will be even better for it. Still a bit dissapointing though..
