I've just had my ADSL router pop...the third time in as many months.

@#$%ing lightning...no comments from the peanut gallery please. :D

My question...

During storms I unplug MY PC from the wall which is linked to another building via a network cable. This plugs into a router, etc.

If the other PC and router, etc. are not unplugged for whatever reason and lightning hits the router either via the power supply or phone line, and then travels along the lines, can it...

1. Kill the network port on the other PC?

2. ...travel down the network line to my power-unplugged PC and kill that?

Thanks, N.

Yes to both. The lightning just across jumped hundreds possibly thousands of meters of air -- a pretty good insulator, why wont it travel along copper?

yeah I've seen several onboard NIC's of unplugged pc's taken out by power surges..

...welcome to Jo'burg. *sigh*

Thanks guys.

I've just spoken to some chaps from the PC shop who reckon surge protectors and UPS' are no help.

Unplug PCs...unplug router...disconnect Router...what a mission!

Thanks everyone.

N.

they talkin shyte, what kuk salesmen im glad they dont work for my company lol

all you need to do is unplug the router power and line and you should be fine

i highly doubt it would take your lan port out but to be sure unplug everything

well whats more of a mission removing the stuff or changing your router every month

Some lightning protection plug companies offer a R20 000 warranty if your equipment is damaged by lightning or a surge. Bought myself one for R200.

I installed surge protectors on the telephone lines and power lines 3 years ago. I have not had any damage since then and my network has been on 24/7. Before fitting the surge protectors my computers / phones were damaged 3 times in two years.
