POST/Diagnostic Cards any good?

Hey all,

I'm looking to buy one of these PCI POST/Diagnostic cards to make finding problems with motherboards easier. I tried searching the forums but didn't find anything related to this. Are these cards any good? Is there maybe something similar that you can recommend? There is also a USB one, but I'm really not sure how that is going to work...

I had one of these (the PCI one) once upon a long time ago but managed to lose it ..and I STILL miss the damn thing! Thanks for this link: at R99, for me it's a no-brainer to be able to get at what ails a non-POSTing board.

Cool :D So it did you good back then when you had one? I just thought it would be a nice add-on to my tools... just wasn't sure if it actually works and you could pin point where the problem is
 
I think the effectiveness depends on the type of hardware used. I was looking at this: http://www.uxd.com/kits.shtml, but at around R15k I need to do some more reading.... I think its particularly handy for people who need to ensure, or at least do everything possible to ensure, that problems are identified and correctly resolved.

Wow... that is a nice kit! But at R15k I think I'll give it a skip... R100 more my price range :P

At R99 it's CLEARLY not in the same league as the others Condradl linked to ..but then, you don't need it for anything fancy either and if the R99 spent to decipher why a board won't POST means you get A sale (yes, just one) of a new system, it's paid for itself .. 'nuff said.
 
I want something that will produce a report and show the faulty component. When I go to the garage for a car service and some greaser gives me a packet with old parts, my first thought is to wonder if they actually replaced faulty parts? It is in their interest to replace stuff to make more money. I am sure that people feel the same way when a computer tech replaces a mobo, RAM and CPU. It would be nice to something to remove the guess work, ensure the problem is resolved, and that helps put peoples minds at rest....
 
Thanks for the replies... Think I'll just pick up the PCI one and see how it works, I'm sure it'll help me... I see that this one has little LEDs showing if the PSU is functioning properly too, wonder how accurate that is because I quite often get that the PSU is stuffing out.

I don't know how the USB one would work, think the PCI one would be better, but then again the USB could be used for laptops too.
