Some postal service workers embarked on an illegal strike on Monday, said the SA Post Office (Sapo).

The strikers were employed in the mail sorting centres, said spokesman Christopher Hlekane.

"Early indications are that some operations, including mail and retail, are being disrupted by the work stoppages," he said.

It was not clear how many workers were on strike.

Hlekane said Sapo management was trying to resolve the workers' issues.

"Sapo advises that the principle of no-work, no-pay will apply. The organisation will also deal with any incidents of intimidation accordingly," he said.

Feels like the post office is always striking, any idea what their demands are?

MOAR!!! MOAR EVERYTHING !!!! GIMME NOW!!!!

We live in a 3rd country expecting 1st world compensation for 5th world performance. I don't understand it, I see so many people begging for employment and this happens. I know it falls down to governmental issues by publishing false inflation rates which leads to inflation related increases being only half the needed value, but at the end of the day if people are unhappy with earnings, find a somebody who will pay you more, if that doesn't work you are not in demand, take what you can.

We should start a strike prediction thread. I reckon next we'll have the truck drivers, then the miners, then the teachers and then the medical staff (maybe even the police). It is almost strike season after all.

Every time I order something online, cheap out and get sapo shipping there is a protest.

GG

Strikes --> increase wages --> drives up inflation --> Rand drops vs Dollar --> drives up inflation --> strikes

I think we're gonna see R/$ above 10 for a long time, maybe years. I hope not, but it looks like that.

At the rate its going now you can almost start using strikes for a drinking game....

General strike - drink
Illegal strike - take one sip from everybody's drink
Miner strike - finish drink

....we are going to get so pissed

We're NEVER going to see the rand below R 10/USD again.

So are those monkeys still on strike? Sent a parcel on the 25th, the guy still hasn't received it. And I warned him to rather dish out a little extra for postnet than take a chance with those incompetent fools.

EDIT : Actually answering my own question, here is the official statement from SAPO.

Strike Update
We’re pleased to announce that an agreement has been signed between the striking part-time workers and the Post Office. Employee attendance today is 98% and we will start working night shifts in Gauteng to deliver the mail as quickly as possible.
A number of postal workers in Durban are picketing at the mail centre, but there is no intimidation and operations in the mail centre are continuing. These workers are showing their dissatisfaction with last year’s salary negotiations. Our human capital management staff are engaging with them.
We are focusing on delivering the time-sensitive mail, such as registered mail and parcels, and we expect that the backlog will be delivered within 14 days.
