PostBox-Courier.com how to

The package is now at customs here. TNT phoned me yesterday and sent me a form to fill in. Did that, and the status is now "held customs, awaiting duties payment from receiver. I mailed them last night to find out how I can pay them for it, but will most likely only be read on Monday. I will call them on Monday to check up.
My Stackry experience seems to be a lot more streamlined. All the customs information is pre-filled before shipping and the USPS/SAPO delivery man allows you to pay via EFT on the spot. Eventually they'll progress to credit card facilities. Heck my pizza man has that. I've never spent so much money outside my gate before!

lol, I think USPS/Sapo does not require the indemnity form that is required by TNT. I think it is more the courier in this case, as with fedex, you have to call them when you see your package come into the country to make arrangements, and the couriers want to make sure that they cannot be held accountable if you are importing more goods than you can without an importer's license.

But the mere fact that stackry does not need you to upload identification is already less of a hassle.

I was just saying that the delivery dude allows you to pay on the spot as opposed to having to call or email the courier to find out.

Stackry handles the customs declaration in the form of an online system where you specify the contents and value of each parcel before they will even consolidate. Your PayPal delivery address needs to match your billing address (but this can be manipulated of course).

Does anyone here have an import license, or do you all import less that 3 parcels per year?

Just import until someone asks questions, then use your wife/sister/girlfriend etc to carry on until the following year.

lol, that could work, was just curious if someone has run into problems before. Besides, customs slapped me with a fat Duties amount for the last shipment, so I think I will have to recover my funds for a bit

Hi guys,

I have tried to understand the last few pages of this thread.

Am I correct in saying that we can order from Amazon without any courier company?

Yes... If amazon will ship the desired product to south africa. If they say they will not ship then you will need to use a company like postbox courier.

Thanks mister, awesome.

Do you know if Postbox Courier service going again? It seems it was shut down for a while.

I recently used Stackry and the service was great.

Hi guys.
Anyone planning on importing something from England in the near future, that wouldn't me throwing in some jars of Brylcream :-) ?

Brylcream? Thought only WWI vets were allowed to use that.

So what are the best alternatives for shipping to SA? I see talk about

Shipito
TNT

Advantages/Disadvantages/Preference

Just wanted to make a distinction between a mail forwarder and a courier from your 2 choices above; Shipito are a mail forwarder whereas TNT are a courier service / company.

Other companies like Shipito are Stackry, MyUS, etc.

:)

I thought I'd post my initial impressions of Shipito.

I placed 3 orders; 2 with Amazon US and 1 with a manga / anime company called Rightstuf, whose prices on certain items are cheaper than Amazon's.

Amazon split my 2 orders into 6 packages, of which 1 package contains a pre-order item that won't ship until the end of June 2014. Similarly, my order from Rightstuf won't ship until mid-June.

So Amazon shipped 5 of my 6 packages to the Shipito Oregon address that I provided. Each time I got a shipping confirmation from Amazon, I logged onto my Shipito account and entered the tracking number of the expected shipment, although Shipito state that it isn't necessary to do this. However, when you do this step, you also have the functionality to specify:
- the contents of the package
- the value of the package, for Customs
- whether the package is a gift
- which courier / shipping option you'd like to choose

If the above sounds like a lot of work, I assure you that it's not.

Shipito received 4 of my 5 expected packages, and for each package, they send you an e-mail confirmation as well as taking 2 photos of the exterior of the package. When you log into your account, you have the option of seeing what packages are stored on your behalf in their warehouse(s). I went with the Oregon warehouse as it doesn't attract sales tax from Amazon. The Oregon warehouse can also store my packages for a maximum of 90 days. Please use this link to see the differences between each Shipito warehouse.

Now, the eagle-eyed among you will be wondering what happened to my 5th package? Yes, Amazon did ship it (via UPS, I might add) and the tracking showed that it had been delivered to the Oregon address, but I hadn't received an e-mail confirmation from Shipito nor was it showing up in the list of packages they had already received on my behalf. I initiated a live chat with one of their employees (Jeffrey) who asked me to log a missing package request, which I did. You have to specify the tracking number of the package. Within 24 hours, I received confirmation from Shipito that they had received the package, but that it wasn't checked into the system. This had now been rectified <phew!>.

So far, I'm impressed with their customer service. I now have the following choices: consolidate my existing packages into a single package and ship it off to me now OR wait until my remaining 2 packages (1 from Amazon and 1 from Rightstuf) are delivered.

I'll post back here any further impressions / information I have.
