Hi all

We're looking to repair some potholes in our complex roads, which are tarred. The damage isn't too major, nothing bigger than a dinner plate, but I'd like it sorted before the summer rains.

What recommendations could you give? Can I do it myself, should I use someone?

Thanks!

I repaired a few with mixed results

1. Dig out all the loose dirt and rubbish, making it roughly square.
2. Fill with concrete - ready mix bags work - to about 3 cm below surface, allow to set.
3. Top with cold asphalt (bags from builders or cash build) and roll smooth with a garden roller.
4. Walk around complex mumbling about how nobody appreciates the effort you put in.

I'm already well versed in number 4! The rest should be a breeze.

Excellent, this sounds like a plan. Thanks :)

Potholes are generally caused by a failure in the underlying layer works either due to water or bad workmanship during construction, but 90% of the times potholes are due to the ingress of water into the layer works .

You can patch but it will always only be a temporary solution, dig out the whole pothole in a square replace gravel and then premix, you can use concrete but it will have the same effect eventually you will be repairing again...

The road probably sees about 10 cars a day, so I'm not overly concerned. And yes it is a water catchment for much of the complex. We will be considering proper repairs in the future, but for now I need a temporary solution.
