Almost every time I have a power cut about 10 minutes later there is a power failure for half an hour

I read in the paper all these power cuts are damaging the switches and infrastructure. Ironic since they're supposed to be fixing the problems hence the power cuts

2 years ago we first started experiencing power failures because of crumbling infrastructure now we're having power cuts for Eishkom that's doing even more damage to the local lines.

So [-]when[/-] if power cuts are stopped we'll probably sit with even more regular power failures than before. Not that Eishkom is worried because that'll be another excuse to up the tarrifs

You live in an industrial area of PMB alanf? Those post-power cut failures are usually caused by big motors/turbines causing spikes in the supply.

There is a thread here somewhere that explains what it is - basically the "big switch" in the substations wear out.

I just trip the main switch on the DB and wait at least 10 mins after power is restored before putting it back on.

Same thing with my folks in Pretoria - plenty of spikes and brownouts etc. after power is "restored". Their DB board has some seriously sensitive spike protectors built in that normally kicks the trip as soon as anything funny comes through.

They normally wait about 30 mins before switching everything on.

Happened to us the first power cut, at 10 the power came on for like less than half a second, then for the next 3 days we didnt have power.

What really annoys me is these "power failures" are ignored in the power cuts, so you get a power failure for 3 hours, they'll still have the nerve to power cut you for 4 hours :(

Just heard they had the same problem in Durban last night as well

If you look at Frankie's thread here that will explain a bit of it.

Makes me worry though - how much longer before that becomes the next excuse to up the prices etc. etc.... :(

Maybe part of the problem is Eskom's suggesting to people to switch their geysers on in the evening, then when there's a late afternoon schedule blackout, everyone switches their geysers on before Eskom resupplies, thus causing BIG spike, the big TRIP.

What a joke. Another power cut, another extra half hour power failure. Instead of 8 hours a week it's closer to 10 with these colossal buffoons in charge

I always thought that this "eating chicken" thing was hearsay, until I saw it at our home affairs office (the section dealing with permanent residence applications) - she ate Kentucky Fried while dealing with clients !!!!

Ever tried phoning them - they can't pick up the phone with greasy hands.

When I did once try to phone them once I had to phone random offices around the country till I actually got a decent answer and someone to answer the phone. :D
