I have a Deye+battery inverter system for my house. Works very well, except we are going into winter now. Down here in CPT that means mostly very little sun, but we have something down here that isnt up north. Wind.

Both during winter and summer.

What would your advice be on installing a wind turbine? Anyone done it? brand? model?

All comments welcome.

Have seen a post a while ago that it is not all it is cracked up to be

ie that bang for buck is low

My folks have one to supplement their solar on their farm. Or more accurately, they have solar to supplement the wind turbine (lots of wind down where they are).

It is a Kestrel, I think with a 900w output or so. They don't have need for a lot of current, so this with 4x PV is enough for their needs.

Back then, I think it cost in the order of around R75k for the turbine, charge controller, Victron 48v inverter and 8x 260aH LA batteries. This is +- 10 years ago.

They are happy with their setup, and have had no complaints thus far. There is blade noise which they got used to and they have had to replace a set of blades once due to I think a hawk strike - the blades are matched so you have to replace all three at once. And being fibreglass, they are not cheap to replace if I recall correctly.

The bottom line is that turbines need to be placed free of obstructions. That pretty much rules out any urban areas and trees. Even if that applies to you, there are other regional and seasonal limitations to wind itself.
