There are no scheduled power blackouts planned despite increased demand for electricity, Eskom said on Tuesday.

"The cold and wet weather has resulted in increased demand for electricity but the power grid is stable," said spokesman Andrew Etzinger.

"No loadshedding has been planned at the moment."

Earlier this month, a coal storage silo at the Majuba power station in Mpumalanga collapsed, resulting in widespread power cuts.

The silo held more than 10,000 tons of coal and affected coal supplies to all six units at the power station.

An investigation into the collapsed silo has since been launched.

Except power here in Rondebosch CPT just dropped at 10:00 and then again at 10:10.
Something gave today, we were off the grid from 10h00 to just before 17h00 today, Cape Town Southern Suburbs.
I had so much work and labelling to do today, what a waste of time, I am quite peeved off. The UPS on the Till and Credit Card machine in our business gave up after 3 and a half hours. Next time I will shut down all my PCs and save the UPS units for our checkout.
How inconvenient and no explanation, I could not plan my day.
Anyone know what happened?

Yeah, there's load shedding.
Stage 1 at present, until 8pm tonight.

Home was off from 08:00 to 10:00 yesterday morning.

Can't you invest in a small generator that can power the UPS'es? Then you have enough time in getting said UPS connected up and started with a 3.5hr load capacity on the UPS.

Even better if said generator have a self-starter, a good electrician will be able to wire the whole lot so that generator will kick in automatically and power just the UPS (and maybe a light or two) with a power failure.

@Toxicbunny - agreed. They must seriously allow private companies to start providing power as it seems that the paralytical Eskom is incapable of doing so.

I'm seriously considering in installing solar lights in my house now. Should loadshedding occur, we will still have lights (and hot water ~ solar geyser) but can use a gas stove to cook food should it be required.

Eskom just is too unstable and cannot be trusted to deliver consistently. Only thing they can deliver consistently, is an expensive service.

Eskom, you lying bitches!!!!

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it received a call from Eskom at 13:00 today (Friday, 21 November 2014) to implement load shedding.

The Municipality began load shedding in terms of the schedule - Group 3 (Uitenhage, Summerstrand, South End) was switched off at 13:15; they will be switched back on between 14:00 and 14:30; Group 4 will be switched off at 14:00; and the rest of the groups will be shed in accordance with the schedule which is available on the NMBM website www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za
