Power prices must double

I am more then willing to pay a higher price like those the larger industries (BHP ... etc) are paying.

Guess that will mean a price reduction and not an increase.

I still can't get my head around the fact that all these increases in coal and electricity production suddenly appeared when the major loadshedding started in Jan2008 - POOF, just like that.

Initially Eskom wanted an 18% electricity hike and Government gave them 14.4%. Immediately after that, they suddenly wanted 53%, and how I read figures that hover around 60% and 100% for 2009/10.

WTF is going on??

Cut the bonuses and pay for the coal yourselves, you bunch of pratts!

Eskom: "Mismanagement on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine".

Eskom wants parts of their price increase application to be closed for public viewing. My guess is that they want to double our pricing while keeping large industries and neighbour countries the same.

As a gesture of good faith the executives should refuse any bonuses and halve their salaries - let them feel the sting of this increase too.

Through incompetence and mismanagement they depleted their coal reserves. And they were found out. Previously they negotiated coal prices from a position of strength. So guess what happens when you go to the market desperate to rebuild your reserves? Your suppliers hike their prices as high as possible. Eskom are now estimating what their stupidity has cost them and will cost them going forward, and passing the cost onto the hapless consumer.

The Bonuses are hush money. There is no way BHP are going to pay any more than what is in there long term contracts - the poor are not going to pay much more, so that leaves only one road, which is to dump the difference on the rest - where are the long term contracts for coal, looks like that paper got used for bonus cheques - small wonder they want a gag order

maybe someone should get a copy of the excl worksheet and have a look at the inputs and formulas

How can you deman a 60% tariff hike, blame soaring coal prices and then laugh in everyones face an make R 12 BN profit. It is not a wonder they dont want the public to have further access to its books.

I agree with bwana about their bonuses etc, they should also be made to suffer, after all, they got performance bonuses for what

If this happened in Japan some board members of the electricity company would have committed suicide for honour's sake.

Here in monkey-land the board members get bonuses.

Share the costs of generating the electricity equally amoungst all the users.
Stop exporting electricity as we do not have enough for our own consumption.
Cut all bonuses of the top managment structure in Escom. How can these bonuses be justified on a basis of performance?????
Give tax breaks on generators, gas and solar conversions, etc.;)
Hold the Government accountable for not realising the urgency of the report presented to them 10 years ago!!! The correct thing to do would be for all the Ministers and Directors of that time to resign as is the case in most reasonably developed countries. In China these individuals would be in very serious trouble. :p
