Power-saving multi-plug launched in South Africa

As long as the sockets are designed in such a way that our ridiculous plugs can fit into one without blocking the others.

Also: WTF is up with making mains sockets just the right size for toddlers fingers?

The UK invented this one back in the 30s. Since both the Nats and the ANC hate the Brits with a passion, we've continued using it long after they switched to better solutions.

Trust me that square UK plug with a built in fuse is not a better solution than the SA round plugs and breakers in the DB board, SA home electrical standards are second to none.

Also your toddler can stick their fingers in all they want, the guards will stop them getting anywhere zappy, and the bigger earth hole will do nothing if you stick a finger in. Although it's obviously not recommended you let your children play with plug sockets.

Hmm, might get one. Though I'm struggling to see if it would be worth it.

Standby devices draw like, what, less than a watt of power when idle? I'm referring here specifically to devices like media players for example.

I don't think I'd want my HTPC (if I had one) or Explora turn off once the TV goes off.

I'd still get one though, I have devices which don't need to be powered on when the TV goes into standby (DVD player, amp, etc)

Weird we actually bought the Ellies version of this same thing yesterday for our server room.
I didn't even pick up that it had this functionality until i read this article.
I looked at the box no and its the same concept.
Was around R600 for a master with 4 plugs i think.

SA does have a new standard, the one that the IEC wants everyone to use. It's legal in SA, but rarely used.

I'm not a fan of UK plugs either, much prefer our set up with the distribution board.

1 unit is 1000watt hours. So if the standby device uses 10watts 100 hours, roughly 4 days.

At R1.5 per unit of electricity you will need to save 83 units to recoup a R125 device (if you buy the 4 pack)

So, ~330 days of continuous standby to recoup your cost.

Factors to keep in mind, device is not on standby 24/7. Standby power use differs. Electricity prices will go up.

I want one for my PC to turn off my monitor, sound system, printer and desk lamp. I will have to measure what all those use in standby, but every little helps :)

On topic. As it's pointed out, saving is minimal for this, the public has also saved enough. What we need is decent plugs able to handle power surges and brownouts (which are frequent and constant with the infrastructure, I had one last night, thank god the UPS took most of the brunt, still had my PC shut down because of the severity of it)

I just switch mine off at the pug when I'm done.

BTW you still have to switch on at the plug with this gadget, right?
