Estimating the load was not rocket science, if you can count light bulbs, and multiply by their rated wattage. Note that the power-factor of LEDs is poor, but the inverter seems to have no problems dealing with this.

We have never had more than 4.5 hours of load shedding in our part of Cape Town, and it's not a disaster if the lights go out. The other side of Rosmead Ave is in a different zone, so we always have some street lights on.

The gates and fence have their own batteries, but the small 12V 7Ah lead-acid ones can't handle repeated load shedding cycles. A centralised inverter and lithium battery is more cost effective in the long-term (combined use-case).

A BC can also be a townhouse complex :) to get the actual draw you can check the inverter, don't have to guesstimate.
In the complex I left in 2018 they just put in an inverter and 8 100ah batteries for the gate, lights and electric fence.
Ripped off though as 4800wh was way over kill for that, but they could never get it right.

I did read the inverter display, and my estimate for the lights was right on the money. I was very surprised that the gates and electric fence together use less than 30W in standby mode!

One installer insisted that we would soon ask for an extra 5kWh battery, but that was during the Stage 6 hype. If you limit loads, you don't need huge batteries.

We do have all the garage plugs on the inverter circuit, but those are intended for door openers mostly (not power tools). I tested a kettle on the inverter, which chows the battery, but only until the water boils (self limiting).

Eskom has recently announced plans to launch an innovative new product which is anticipated to contribute to enhanced electricity supply and provide increased customer choice.

The product, known as “virtual wheeling”, is currently at an advanced stage of development. Virtual wheeling is expected to enable industrial and commercial customers embedded within both Eskom and municipal networks to become customers of the growing number of electricity traders being licensed by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, Nersa.
 
They just posted that daytime stage 1 back to normal tomorrow. Don't know if that's official.
