Haven't banged out the heater yet, but have my hoody on now.

Looks like Jesus doesn't want our schedule to change.

I wonder if City Power's "leaked" loadshedding change declaration yesterday was on purpose, just in case ANC / Eskom may have wanted to rule against.

Busy thread, for those who missed it here's a copy. It's apparently not the final draft.

CITY POWER AMENDS LOADSHEDDING SCHEDULES TO REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF
BLACKOUTS

City Power is rolling out a plan to alleviate the pressure on its customers by implementing a
revised loadshedding schedule that will reduce the frequency of blackouts and ensure minimal
disruption to our customers lives.

The intention to move to a revised loadshedding schedule, from the first week of June and this
has already been communicated to Eskom and the regulators.

This approach seeks to ensure that the City's base load sitting at 2.3GW, remains intact and is
not compromised by the constant implementation of higher stages of load-shedding by Eskom.
City Power CEO Ms Tshifularo Mashava said with the new load-shedding schedule, our
customers will be relieved of some inconveniences as City Power will ensure that in a 24-hour
period, each block appears once per stage.

"This effectively means that each block serviced by City Power will only be shed once for 2hrs a
day in a 24hr cycle at stage 1 or higher stages. With the higher stages of loadshedding which are
becoming our lived reality now, the lives of our customers are disrupted alongside City Power
operations and well-being, with some customers enduring almost 10hrs of loadshedding in one
day. This necessitated us to think of ways to cushion our residents and minimize the disruptions.”
said Ms Mashava

"The new loadshedding schedule will ensure that City Power customers no longer endure many
hours of loadshedding, with others shed for 4hrs in one go. This schedule will reduce the
frequency of customers being shed and in addition, blocks will not get shed at the same time for

the same stage on consecutive days. In simple terms, our customers will be on for longer than it
is now", Mashava added.

City Power technical team has been working hard for the past few months, looking for alternatives
to loadshedding, and finding ways to reduce the burden of loadshedding on the customers, our
infrastructure and resources.

Our teams established that with the current loadshedding schedule, City Power has been giving
Eskom enough to enable us to spread the load across and reduced a significant percentage of
our peak load every time it is requested by Eskom.

For instance, if one divides the number of blocks to 16, one will get about 160MW which will then
give us options to exclude some customers and also be able to comply to give Eskom the
required MW of about 125MW per stage.

However, if one divides it by 24 blocks, one will get about 100MW which is lesser than the
required MW that is needed to give Eskom per stage and will not also be able to accommodate
any exclusion that we need to implement.

For example, during one Stage 4 loadsheding last year we gave Eskom 600 MW, almost double
what was needed for that stage.

Throughout the recent months, our technicians conducted simulations and confirmed the viability
of putting our customers on a revised load-shedding schedule - in phases to exclude businesses
and domestic customers.

"In addition, we will gradually exclude some industrial customers, businesses, and essential
services from loadshedding. We will start with network reconfiguration in the coming months
which will enable the total exclusion of many embedded essential services such as water pump
stations, hospitals and medical centres with life-support requirements as well as national key
points reliant on electricity for their core operations. We move from the premise that we are not
being fair to ourselves and our customers if we remain on the current loadshedding schedule.

That is why we are reviewing not only the hours but megawatts we give to Eskom at any given
episode of loadshedding. This will go a long way in ensuring not only do we save jobs, and attract
much needed investments within the City of Johannesburg, but will also ensure we as City Power
secure our revenue base. It will also ensure we put more focus on core maintenance of our fleet
whose wear and tear has increased with the relentless loadshedding of late. Ours is the belief
that the benefits of this new schedule supersedes the challenges which we are prepared for," said
Mashava.

One of the challenges is the extra operators, controllers and technicians needed to implement this
new schedule. More manpower will be needed to ensure the success of our plan, as some of our
substations can't be operated manually including those in Midrand, Lenasia, Roodepoort and
Randburg Service Delivery Centres (SDCs), which will need to be switched on manually while
Alexandra, Inner City, Reuven and Hursthill can be switched on and off remotely. Work to extend
the remote controlling network is planned with a budget committed by the shareholder.

A process has already started to bring in more technicians and operators, with some in-sourced
all ready to be deployed in areas that will need manual switching on and off during the new load-
shedding schedule.

City Power’s 2hr-once-off new loadshedding schedule plan can be implemented until Stage 7
loadshedding, with minor additions to loadshedding hours per day when we hit Stage 8 and
beyond.

City Power’s mission is to meet the expectation of its customers by providing a sustainable,
affordable, safe and reliable energy supply and keeping the lights on.

I wonder if this means, hospitals, water reservoirs and such will be on their own substations, or if City power is working towards something along this line?

In Cape Town i know all hospitals are on a separate grid and if they not, that grid they fall on is not loadshed. This has been quite the norm from what i have seen, i work for a distribution company and the company we buy the goods we distribute is just down the road from us in CT CBD... They are on the same grid as a big hospital, we are not... We get hit stages 1 - 6 they have yet to go off stages 1 to 6...

Right, but winter starts officially in just over two weeks. Right now we need more generation capacity. Not much we can do before winter starts.
What balls.

This notion of a season starting on an official date is such garbage.

Honestly not that I've seen it manage consumption
When I check on the CBI app, I can see the KWh consumption and it's definitely higher when the geyser is left on as opposed to when I manage a schedule. I just use google home as I can consolidate all the differing devices in one place.

There has been times where they have purposely put us off with the wrong block and time. Though I welcome a reduced schedule, if they can't follow the current one which pretty simple. I can't wait to see how they handle a more jumbled mess.

Through history society has marked the passing of time in different ways. Today stating that a season/year/month starts on a specific date is the way we do it now. Nothing to get into a huff about.

Ok. Retard.

Edit: Karen, I meant Karen. My auto-correct has tourettes.

You're an exception here, haven't seen many others with that kind of mess.
What I'm hoping it also means is sometimes an end to or less 4 hour shifts. Anything more re advantages seems unlikely.
