They've started with some interesting demand side management experiments on this side. I just signed up for one.There's a doccie on one of the DStv channels that I just saw, shows how they're now trying to store overnight etc. in Europe using gravity and heavy pulley "bricks" and weights. One system uses 6 cranes. Doing quite well with it already.
Also, some cryogenic freezing & thawing of plain air (just filtered).
They nominate a peak hour in which they want to manage the demand. During this hour, for every 1kwh that I reduce my usage by compared to my average for that 1 hour period, they give me credits worth (today) £2.25
