The ANC has proven themselves incapable of building and/or maintaining base load. Unstable renewables in enough quantity would still be better than what we have now.

If we could spend R100b and get reliable base load fantastic...but we can't. And no giving nuclear power to the ANC just seems like a recipe for disaster. We can see what they are capable of coal already...they are capable of destruction not construction.

Then an unscheduled shedding kicked in at 10:30... and power's still out. Yay.

I had a thought, might have been mentioned already, but a possible way to solve the renewable day time only scenario would be to use all excess PV during the day from combined households to "top up" pumped storage, then use that at night.
It would probably require lots and lots of household PV, though, so not sure if it is even feasible.
