They were serviced recently too so we good for a while nowGas turbines are quite robust, and can run continuously with limited maintenance. They do eventually need to be serviced, probably 8000 hours (1 year) and refurbished after 24,000 hours (3 years). They are modular, and spares are freely available. The main issue is that when run so hard the cost of fuel consumed far exceeds the capital cost...
This link says they last much longer when used continuously compared to stop/start peaking use:

Factors influencing maintenance intervals for gas turbines
By far the most significant factors affecting the maintenance interval are the type of operation (base load, peak load, trips, starts), the type of fuels used, the method of NOx control, and the quality of air entering the turbine.www.twi-global.com

Yes, but we don't have the chart for the 21st so it's all assumptions and guesses at this point. The chart that you posted on Thursday shows that many of the OCGTs were running 24 hours a day during most of last week:

Sounds like you're involved, nice to have you aboard the thread.OCGT are made for quick start, and to be loaded and unloaded as required, it has no direct effect on maintenance. They work best at full load, and are inefficient at part load. Continuous operation is also not an issue, as long as the the required maintenance are done.

Not defending the Minister's stance here but it should be noted that R30bn is a drop in the ocean compared to lost economic output from higher levels of LS.So Minileccy's great engineering solution is to spend R30bn on diesel...

Power crisis: Ramokgopa's 18-month plan to prevent total economic collapse | News24
Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has finally publicly shared his plans to end the energy crisis after tabling it to the ANC national working committee and national executive committee.www.news24.com
Not for Eskom it isn't. Expect your leccy bill to go up 75% next year. Not defending the Minister's stance here but it should be noted that R30bn is a drop in the ocean compared to lost economic output from higher levels of LS.
Minileccy should be ignored for anything he says is meaningless as he has no powers to do anything. So Minileccy's great engineering solution is to decrease the sabotage that wasn't a problem, and spend R30bn that we don't have on diesel rather than new capacity...

It's a lot of money for something you'll never get back. New capacity will both recover the capital and drive economic output. Not defending the Minister's stance here but it should be noted that R30bn is a drop in the ocean compared to lost economic output from higher levels of LS.

Sorry, should have said involved in the industry.I don't work for Eskom, or involved with them in any way.
I don't want career burning names on my CV.

I know this is asked quite often... But for us non-electricity-understanding-people, please explain the concern?WTF

Hourly demand is compared against available capacity, to indicate the amount of surplus/shortfall there was. Available capacity must be matched with the total RSA contracted demand.www.eskom.co.za
