The thing is they keep hitting the big guys, they big guys will eventually find other means to get power then they have residents who pay and then all the squatters who get free power so they kinda need to keep the big guys somewhat happy otherwise they get no money
I think it's more like there are contracts involved and huge penalties to pay. The big boys also pay a crap load less than us afaik.

So with these new smart prepaid meters that are being rolled out, they state that they can cut your power if your usage is too high... Theoretically this will also allow them to loadshed the homes in the areas that are currently exempt, due to critical infrastructure in the area.

Also shed load on a more granular level, by switching off the homes, but keeping the street lights on. Am I giving them too much credit?

Eventually, depending on how much longer this mess drags out and how much worse it gets.

I think initially it will just be used to limit load to less than what a typical geyser uses. If the geyser turns on, it trips your mains. That's how they would "force" you to turn it off from my understanding.

If that's not cutting it, they would keep lowering it. Until we're back to load shedding as we know it, except managed remotely instead of a guy driving out to flip the switch...

It's always great when they are going to spend 4 years and 16 billion rand rolling out smart meters rather than doing anything real to fix load-shedding. The solution of reducing demand indicates that there is no real plan to increase supply in the next 4 years. This was the best they could come up with in that time frame. Great. Fantastic. Good luck to those who are staying. May the odds be forever in your favor :) :)

4 years, hahahahaha, yeah there is no way in hell they'll manage to roll it out in 4 years time and by then there would probably not be much left at the rate things are going now.

Interesting estimate from a private investment firm that private power generation will exceed that of Eskom's effective supply by 2025 (a bit dodgy I think - not sure about the calculations but I'm guessing they are assuming 100 EAF on private capacity and the current 53 percent for Eskom)

The workers who are working around the clock (I see that is the new phrase slipped into all press statements) are seemingly breaking things rather than fixing things. Note that NONE of the 9 generators that tripped on Monday afternoon have been fixed (I'm assuming it's the same generator if the same power station was mentioned between Monday and now).
