Disclaimer: I am only posting this as food for thought, and so that enough people are aware of this to diffuse its potential effect. I am also personally not accusing Old Mutual or its staff of anything.

There's a voice message doing its rounds on Whatsapp in Afrikaans, some character claiming to work for Old Mutual and having overheard or discovered some conversation with political seniors that discusses plans to cause the power grid to fail in December for at least 2 weeks, followed by a State of Emergency.

Highly likely BS I'm sure, and maybe just good for a laugh. But I must add that it did sound convincing. I'm sure others would have / will post it and cause some confusion.

Anyway...

This is completely likely unfortunately. The cadres made big bucks from Covid. A 2 week blackout will allow them to gain control of SA and exploit it further by creating the disaster.

Sadly, many of us are not privy to fun & spicy conversations that happen in Afrikaans language groups. @TheChamp - do you have any Isuzu friends/acquaintances that forward you such messages?

Maybe John has seen that message and will elaborate further.

As bad as politics have become (worldwide IMO) , I think it's highly unlikely that even our lot would be willing to sink that low, or at least not for the exposure threat to them.

Voice messages going around on whatsapp are BS until proven otherwise.

I think you give the cadres too much credit. If they can throw you under the bus and make money from it, they will throw you under the bus.

Point is, will they risk exposure to their voters? And so far they haven't gone to these extremes as a group, just a few select nasties among them.

Half of them are violent thieves, and the other half is non-violent thieves. And they do not fear "their people".

Voice note = nonsense

Yeah, much more likely that they will do something like this during elections. Call a state of disaster, cancel the elections, take control of the country via special powers due to state of disaster. "Rule" over the ashes of South Africa without any worries of ever being voted out.

As for the above government / Eskom statement, looks like more smoke and mirrors to me.

"The DPE is urgently working with National Treasury and Eskom for it to find the money to buy supplies of diesel."
Either National Treasury supplies it, or not.
Where is it? Have they checked all the couches yet?

Thanks for the heads-up, will watch but if it's more BS waffle from them it will be another 2 or 3 years until I even look at them again..
There's limited options when in opposition to fix the power situation. Just listen to their potential policies and if it makes sense to you.
