And there's a subscriber locked article on News24 saying the Treasury and Eskom are at odds about diesel costs....as already extensively been discussed, the cost of diesel to the Treasury must be a fraction of the lost taxes through LS.

I gather that it's got to do with the condition that they can't use diesel for baseload. I think I read that the diesel budget's been cut by 6%.
I mean it's not meant to be but for lack of any other available baseload it's the only option. Without that buffer there's nothing else but high stages

If they had switched Ankerlig to CCTG then we could use it as baseload.
 
Is using diesel as a busload, really a viable alternative? The amount of fuel needed is like 6 million litres of the stuff a day - costs would be enormous.

No it's not. They are called peaker plants for a reason. They cost R4/kWh then Eskom sell it for R2/kWh.

They could and the UK runs most of the time on CCTGs, as long as you've got gas, you can run.
You can also do load following properly as it is quick to react like an OCTG, it's also more reliable then sun or wind.

my theory is because OCGT's ramp up quicker than CCGT's which is what they are at the end of the day, peaker plants that are being used for baseload more and more.
