Eskom reported that planned maintenance accounted for 6,462MW of losses, while breakdowns were at to 15,977MW of generating capacity.
The mind boggles how so much capacity can be offline for 'reasons' for so ****ing long. I don't think I've seen that 16k decrease. Ever. Also, I'm not convinced it was due to breakdowns; they are running out of diesel, because it's around the time I had estimated a shift to stage 5/6 based on the data I had found in terms of stockpiles and consumption last week.

What gets me is, before we'd only be on these long stages for a day or 2, now it's pretty much permanent. It's like they just don't have the will to fix anything

WED: Stage 4 until midnight.
THU: Stage 4 from midnight until 5am, then stage 5 until midnight.
FRI: Stage 5 from midnight until midnight (throughout the day).
SAT-SUN: Stage 5 from midnight until 5am, then stage 4 until 4pm, then stage 5 until midnight.
all meaningless.

I'm pretty sure most of the power stations have degraded to a point where they need large components replaced and patchwork only last for a while.

If you look how quickly kusile broke from being abused the other power stations must be in really bad shape.

Probably plants that are due to be decommissioned in the next few years and are in need of major overhaul.

Yeah looks like it was 2GW dropped, but not overnight as they said, as power alert after 12 was over 24GW now it's barely scraping 23GW
I take full responsibility. Now we just need diesel to run out so we can go to stage 8.

We already have an incredibly fragile system, adding on unreliable power on an unreliable grid? Isn't going to fix issues.
You've been bought and sold by big base (oil, coal) my friend. They used to say it was price... Now that's gone, they just keep repeating the "base load fallacy" with no evidence -- just feels and "that's how we used to do it".

You need
Solar + Wind + a bit of storage + peaker plants+ if you want a thin slither of continuous cheap power (Nuclear)

You don't need base load to do the majority of it. Only people peddling baseload still think you do.

Incorrect. There are days when the renewables here barely make 2GW... all day. Sorry, a bit of storage and some peaker plants aint gonna cut it.

You know big oil and coal love renewables right? As it still gives them the revenue.
You know what they don't like nuclear, as that leaves them without anything to supply

We'd need Germany level of renewables which currently is 64GW of wind and 60GW of solar and that would just cover us

Sorry pal, you still need baseload.
