We haven't had water for 3ish weeks at this point.

I'm also out later this year. Either spend a bar going off grid or head off to a brighter tomorrow, guess which option won...
Well I spent around 100k for a solar setup back in 2018 which serves me and my family well. We only pull R200 worth of power from eskom pm aside from the ridiculous Eskom/CoJ charges.

Not sure where you get a bar to go fully off grid but if someone is able to break it down for me, that would be great.

As for leaving, I just want to live somewhere with stable power supply and where I'm not taxed through my nostrils for services that can't be rendered.

Yeah, you don't need to spend anywhere near that sort of money to go off-grid.

Can be done for R300k easily.

600k for a solar system + 200k to drill borehole + 100k for solar borehole pump and redoing a lot of the outside water piping put in like 140 years ago.

Talking about fully off grid, so it's budgeted for winter usage + excess. Spend about 6k a month on Eskom power during summer... Run a few server racks in the wine cellar for work reasons :(

Yeah, you could probably just move abroad but also "wine cellar", sounds like 1st world problems

I think R1 mill is a bit of an exaggeration but going fully off grid for everything is always a lot more than "mostly" off grid.
Also, I think they mean water and electricity which I think might just be close to R1 mil.

It is now impossible to go off-grid on land that is zoned as residential. And the "off-grid" housing plots all stand to be re-classified as residential. Technically it is not possible to go off-grid, if you own a house in SA you will pay what they tell you to pay regardless.

So how fcked are we looking for the next week or so.
I think it is going to get much worse.

The corrupt employees/suppliers have started smelling big lunches at the troughs since the mention of a State of Emergency. Waiting for the bypassing of the processes. And I am sure they are creating a bigger crises in order to gather support for it.
