Help ... in my small business I have three PB G4s, two of which connect nicely to the internet through either a Motorola or Nokia phone. The third, a new used machine, is making me pull my hair out ... l simply can't seem to set it up correctly to connect to the internet using the phones as modem. I set up the other two machines so I did something right there - this machine is frustrating me. Either I get the 'there is no dial tone' message, or the one that says that 'this connection doesn't exist' or something to that effect.

I've set up the location, the configuration - including selected the brand and type (3G, GPRS) ... Telephone number *99[hash] (the hash doesn't print - have to copy and paste from a Word document ...). What am I missing? Any help appreciated.

P.S. The 3G is used for mobile business - at the office we have a wireless connection to which the machine connects seamlessly.

Have you tried copying the network preferences from one of the working machines to the one that is giving you problems?

I'm pretty sure this is the file you want /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist - just make a copy of the old one in case you need it again

Thanks so much Bwana - I bluetoothed the file from one of the connected machines over to the, um, disconnected one and it's now ... connected.

Thanks also for your input Greg - we're using Leopard (Snow Leopard not yet 3G compatible apparently). I meant that the hash doesn't appear when you press shift 3 ... I get the pound sign.

All good now. Very happy personage!

Dang. Missed that small detail. Oh, well, will have to start saving for a new stable ;-)

Try pressing option (alt) 3 to get the hash.
