just installed vodacom's vodafone card. downloaded 3 versions of vodafone dash software. Finds card, network and activates - tried internet connect with PPP options - get error 'no carrier found'. Got DNS IP's from vodacom 168.210.2.2 and put into network config. No luck. Are there any 'left out by vodacom' powerbook users out their with same problems and solutions?

Thanks - its similar to software I’m trying from vodaphone (novemedia.de) .

http://www.vodafone.co.uk/cgi-bin/C...usiness+Services/Vodafone+Mobile+Connect+Card

This software works, finds network, gets ppp connection settings and all seems fine, unitl you have to connect through interet connect panel.

message ‘connecting...’ then ‘no carrier found’. Called vodacom tech supp. Don’t support macs was reply but got DNS servers from them. Stuck them into tcp/ip connect settings and retried – same problem.

Hi,

1) Which version of the dash do you have? Should be 2.01. And which data card?

The earlier versions did not support the Novatel card, although it sounds like this is not your problem.

2) Is your SIM activated for the 3G service? Could you possibly try the card/SIM combo in a *shudder* Windoze system?

Sorry for all the questions, but we need to start eliminating potential problem areas.

By the way, MAC OS is an officially Vodacom supported OS, but obviously not by the guy you spoke to....

See below for potential solutions to your problem

Some common MAC questions

Q: Supported Operating Systems
A: Mac OS X 10.2.6 or higher, 10.3.x, 10.4.x. Recommended is 10.3.4 or higher.

Q: Non-supported Operating Systems
A: All others, e.g. Mac OS 9.x.

Q: I am using the U630, but I do not get the full 3G speed. I am running Mac OS 10.4 "Tiger".

A: Apple implemented a new PC Card driver for 10.4. This driver does not support full 3G speed. Please ask Apple when there will be an update that fixes this issue.

Q: my help viewer does not show the help correctly. I am using Mac OS X 10.2.

A: The Mac OS X 10.2 Help Viewer is not able to display the Vodafone Mobile Connect for Mac manual correctly. To read the manual, please double-click on the manual icon in the Vodafone Mobile Connect folder. The manual will then be displayed in your web browser.

Q: Software does not detect modem
A1: Device: 3G datacard
The datacard has to be inserted in the PC Card slot after the PowerBook has started up completely. The card then needs approximately 30 seconds to register onto the mobile network. After this the lights on the card will blink in a regular pattern, and the software can be started.

A2: Device: 3G datacard
The datacard cannot be left in the PC Card slot during whilst the PowerBook starts up.
Quit the software. Take the datacard out, re-insert it, wait for approximately 30 seconds for the card to register onto the mobile network, and then re-start the software.
A3: Device: GPRS datacard
The operating system has not completely detected the device.
This is usually because more than one device is being used. Open the Apple Menu (blue Apple icon at top-left of Mac screen), select "System Preferences…", and then select "Network". An announcement should appear that a "new serial port" has been detected should be displayed.

Q: Software does not display the right protocol
A: The desired speed has not been selected.
Please go to the "Speed" tab and select the desired speed by clicking the radio button beside it.

Q: Software does not find a signal or shows no signal strength
A1: The SIM card might not be inserted.
Please quit the software. Take the datacard out of the PowerBook, and then check if a SIM card is inserted. If not, please insert your SIM card into the datacard. Then insert the datacard, wait approximately 30 seconds for the card to register onto the mobile network, and then start the software.
A2: The signal quality might be too low.
Check if the internal antenna of the datacard is extended, if applicable (e.g. with the GPRS card). Move to a location where better reception can be expected, and restart the software.
A3: There might be no coverage.
Check if reception is available at your location.

Q: Software does not find a network provider
A1: The SIM card might not be inserted.
Please quit the software. Take the datacard out of the PowerBook, and then check if a SIM card is inserted. If not, please insert your SIM card into the datacard. Then insert the datacard into the PowerBook, wait approximately 30 seconds for the card to log into the network and start the software.
A2: The signal quality might be too low.
Check if the internal antenna of the datacard is extended, if applicable (e.g. with the GPRS card). Move to a location where better reception can be expected and restart the software.
A3: There might be no coverage.
Check if reception is available at your location.

Q: Software does not display the right language
A: The language can be set in Preferences.
Please go to the "Preferences" tab and select the language you want to use. The software will quit, and when it is re-started, the chosen language will be used.

Q: No location is created in the system preferences.
A1: You are not logged in as an 'Administrator'.
Please open the Apple menu (blue Apple icon top left-hand corner of screen) and select "System Preferences", and then "Users". Choose your user account and activate Administrator Rights for it.
A2: You have switched to a different user than the user for whom the software was installed. Please switch back to the user for whom the software was installed.
A3: The name of the hard disk contains invalid characters.
Quit all programs and then make sure that the name of your hard disk contains only letters, numbers or spaces. Re-start the software and click the "Activate" button. A new 'Location' should show up in the System Preferences Network panel.
A4: The permissions to create a Location are corrupted.
Re-start from your OS X 10.3 Panther CD (or Jaguar if you are using Mac OS 10.2). Do not start from your own hard disk.
Start the "Disk Utility" program from the Applications/Utilities folder. Select "First Aid" and then select the symbol of your hard disk. Click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button. After Repair Disk Permissions has finished, click "Repair Volume".
Restart the Vodafone software again and click the "Activate" button. A new location should now show up in the System Preferences Network panel.

Q: After clicking on "Connect" in the Internet Connect program I get a "no carrier detected" message.
A1: The software has lost its network information.
Please run the software again to register the datacard onto the mobile network.
A2: The network cell does not support GPRS or UMTS (3G).
Please call your network provider to find out where the next GPRS or UMTS (3G) option is available.
A3: You have selected GSM under the "Speed" tab of the software.
GSM connection details like username and password are not available for all network carriers. Please follow the manual to set up a GSM connection. The manual is in the software folder.

Q: "User identification failed" message appears after clicking on "Connect" in the Internet Connection program
A1: The SIM card might not be 'activated' for GPRS or UMTS (3G), and you can therefore not use these services.
A2: The GPRS or UMTS (3G) settings may have changed.
Please check to see if a new software release is available. If not, please refer to the section in the manual entitled "Custom GPRS / UMTS (3G) Settings". The manual is in the software folder.

Q: The Spanish Help document is still in English.
A1: Spanish text was not available in time for this release.
Full Spanish text has recently been delivered and will be incorporated into the Help files as soon as it has been checked.

Q: The PIN is not retained in the software.
A1: This has been seen when using OS X 10.3.4 and the UMTS (3G) datacard. When the option "Send PIN automatically" has been selected, the software asks for the PIN again the next time the PowerBook is woken up or re-started, or the card is re-inserted.
If the PIN is re-entered a second time, it will then be saved as expected.

thanks vodacom3g - turns out the card was faulty. connecting with a replacement is no problem with the dash software from vodafone.

However, (mac os x problem or card problem?), the novatel card disconnects after 2 minutes, every 2 minutes. Sometimes a reconnection works through internet connect window, but majority of the time have to restart.

I remember a post in this forum highlighting this prob, a solution being a swop for an Option card? have to go and read fully.

Are you aware of a fix? thanks

There was a similar problem reported by a forumite, using a UK Vodafone card in Germany. He also got the 2min thing. We've not had local reports on this.

This makes me wonder if it might be peculiar to the European software? Which version did you download and from where?

connection dropping off seems to be a signal strength problem. moved to different location and and get stable connection on 3g.

Using dash downloaded from vodafone uk. v 2.01.

however, another issue is, i get 'relay acces denied' when trying to reach smtp server for outgoing mail. tried 2 different accounts. Is there something i need to set in mail client?

Are you using smtp.vodacom.co.za as your outgoing smtp server?

If so, is this where you're getting the errors message.

The Vodafone 2.01 should be same as the local 2.01 version. Interesting that the two reports we had on the forum on this 2 min drop issue both occur with 'UK' software.
