Has anyone been successful in creating a PPPoE connection on a different router, not using the Vodacom S3 router that they supply with the installation?

I received my PPPoE credentials, but it's not working. I triple checked the details and even asked them to sms it to me. On Mikrotik, it tries to connect, then disconnects immediately before assigning an IP or anything else. I also tried a D-Link router that I had lying in my cupboard, but it also fails with 3 separate errors:
Unknown Error
Authentication Failure
No response from the server

I have been through several call center agents with no joy. I logged a ticket, but no response so far.

Is there anything I need to look out for or do differently, before I throw this router out the window?

What is the error response on the Mikrotik?

So I suppose I have to specify a "host-uniq". I tried the MAC address of their router, no dice, different error though.
