PPPoE connections very slow

I run my router in bridged mode and dial up my adsl accounts on my pc. When I first connect them, everything is fine. But after a while they all become extremely slow for no reason. I can't even load any websites. If I put one of the connections that was extremely slow as a pppoe coonection into my router, everything is fine again, internet is fast.

Any idea what's causing this? It's almost as if they are being heavily shaped...

It's probably a problem on your router. My guess would be that the PPPOE connections are straining its resources, probably due to a bug, hence causing the gradual slow-down.

Try updating the firmware of your router, or resetting it to factory defaults and configuring it from scratch.

Also, how many concurrent PPPOE connections are passing through your ADSL line? There might be a limitation in the Telkom Exchange or somewhere on the Telkom network which doesn't allow more than a certain number of PPPOE connections per ADSL line.

Cool will try resetting to default and updating firmware. Well normally I'd run 2 at a time fine (using traffic splitter) but even if I run one at a time now, it starts off fine but ends up extremely slow.

Running 2 simultaneous connections should be fine. I thought you might be pushing 6-7 accounts, and hitting a limit on Telkom's network. If the problem is happening even if you run one a time, then there's definitely something up with your modem.

Let us know if things improve after resetting and/or updating the firmware.

BTW, what modem do you have?

Tried resetting, no luck. Running a D-Link DSL 2540u. Tried updating the firmware but the router doesn't recognise the file I downloaded :/

Meh. Tried IE and Chrome, get a "fatal error occured during upload of image" error :/

Yeah well my router ran my 2 connections fine up until about a month ago

Thanks tried that and it's an actual image file, but like I said, I get a fatal error when trying to update now

Guess you should probably toss your modem out the window, and go out and buy a decent Netgear modem, like the DGN2000 or whatever it's successor is.

If you're going to buy an ADSL modem, please take in consideration that many of the newer Netgear ADSL modems does not support bridge/half-bridge modes and they probably don't allow you to pick between G.DMT and ADSL2+ modulation either.

The SNR margins on the D-Link and TP-Link ADSL modems are really good. The few things that I dislike about the D-Link modems are that you can accidentally flash it with incorrect firmware which results in the modem being "bricked", and secondly that their local website is offline.

So when you're trying to update the firmware of the D-Link ADSL modems, make 200% sure that the model and build (eg. BRU C/D) is exactly the same as on the sticker at the bottom of your ADSL modem! Also make sure that you're uploading it via a LAN cable, and not via wireless.

Currently the D-Link DSL-2750U and TP-Link W8960N are my favourite ADSL modems - both offering 802.11n wireless support.
