OK, you old hats may be able to help here. I've searched the forum, can't find much useful stuff.

Got a router, D-Link DI-704P, and set it for local LAN etc. No problems with DHCP or connecting to the web management on the 704.
Plugged my Sentech modem into the WAN port using the Ethernet cable.
Set up the WAN service on the 704 as Dynamic PPPoE, and put in my Sentech username and password.
I've tried Auto-connect, Manual Connect and When Needed settings, but no matter what, the modem will not connect - the green light just sits there blinking away.

What have I missed here? Have I done something daft?

Have you rebooted the modem after plugging in the PPPoE cable? (The modem has to detect the new cable during bootup) If the cable has an LED, it should be lit. - Took me a while to figure this out.

Yep, reset it, and the cable LED was lit.

I suppose I should plug the modem directly into my PC NIC - that'll take the router out for the equation.

In the D-Link setup, I left "service name" blank - is that right?

I have a Linksys, all I entered was uid & pwd... and obviously told it to use PPPoE and baddabing!.. So, that means you have aparantly done everything right so far.

Could you get it working on your PC after reinstalling the IPW software for PPPoE?

AhA, that might be your problem... before connecting pppoe, you need a succesfull connection over the USB interface on the sentech dialler, or mysignal, once this happens, it writes the user/pass to the modem, the pppoe sessions will only allow a connection on a user/pass that has been used before on that modem, when you hit the reset switch on the modem, this data is cleared!
Start over
step 1 : Connect via usb, dial in using your user/pass
step 2 : disconect, unplug from usb, then turn off modem
step 3 : connect pppoe cable, turn modem back on

you should be good to go!

Thank you Dorris! That was it! Moved it straight from USB to PPPoE on my own PC, and it worked (after I stopped the NIC from trying to force 100MBps Full Duplex), then moved it to the D-Link, and it's all working great. Got both our PCs online, VPN connections work, Emule incoming ports are open, and all is well.
