I've just installed my second monitor, and I want the background black, while I keep this (NSFW) on my primary monitor. Due to the odd way windows numbers monitors, and the way it spans desktops across monitors with different resolutions, it need to Frankenstein the image.

I want to:

1. Move exactly 432 pixels of the images from the bottom to the top, while keeping the height 1200 pixels
2. Increase the width of the image to 2944 pixels by adding 1024 pixels to the left side.
3. Fill those new pixels black.

Any suggestion on how to do this. My current photo editing knowledge is: Paint, and a 10 year old version of Photoshop limited that I don't have installed any more. Maybe something online?

Thanks.

Edit: As I clicked submit, I realised that this is probably better in the photos forum. Sorry.

Been years since i last had multi monitors but surely you can sort it out without going down the road your trying to?
From memory isn't there a "make this monitor the default" selection there & work forwards from there.

I got paint.net, and it seems capable, but it's a lot of work! My first few attempts were failures, and I need to move 786 pixels from the bottom to the top, not 432 like I first assumed. I guess I'm looking for something more like a CAD program with snaps, rather than trying to line things up by eye.

Tun@, I've tried, then I googled, then tried some more. It seems the only way to do different backgrounds on dual monitor setups, is to stitch the images together or to do some trick involving "web backgrounds".

This worked 100%. Legendary free and open software.

Synaesthesia, it produced the same image as you did, but you lost a few pixels in the process, so there was a white line where the image rejoined, and the black area was maybe 1 pixel too wide. I guess that will always be the problem with raster image editing. Thanks though.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Use Photoshop and check what resoolution each screen is on. Then just resize each image according to the resolution.

BTW... did you guys know that you can use Google to find wallpaper for your precise desktop dimensions?

1) go to Google Image Search... http://www.google.co.za/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi
2) click on the "Advanced Image Search" Link
3) In the exact size field click on the link on the far right that says Use my desktop size"
4) Then search for whatever you are looking for! eg. "space abstract"

Presto... free wallpaper for you computer monitor size!
