Hi

Just completed 'self-install' this morning. Was given a Marconi 'premium combo' router and a Marconi wireless usb dongle. I can connect to the internet with an ethernet cable, but not wirelessly.

I am using WPA_PSK security, and I am sure it is correct. The PC with the dongle connects to the router (signal strength = excellent) but it is not assigned an IP. The routers IP is 10.0.0.2. The PC just chills on 0.0.0.0. I have tried manually inputting an IP (10.0.0.5) but I still cannot ping the router (10.0.0.2).

Any ideas?

Not sure if this is relevant, but the dongle's instruction guide says I must use WEP security, and the router says I must use WPA. Telkom supplied them together.

Maybe the dongle doesn't support WPA?

It does support WPA. I'm new to wireless networking - it could be something very basic that I'mk doing wrong - although I was on the phone with a Telkom techie for 55 minutes, and he couldn't help!

Check under your router ;) Lift it up and look at it's bottom, there's a key there :p

Have you tried to see if you can connect to the router via cable?

Yes, I am online now with an ethernet cable. The router correctly assigned this PC an IP (10.0.0.4) but refuses to assign the other PC with the dongle an IP, although a connection seems to be established.

@teraside. I found the WPA_PSK key and have entered it correctly. The problem persists.

I'm not sure if it'll work but try inputting all the dongle PC's settings manually, not just the IP but gateway, dns etc.

Tried that. Doesn't work. Still can't ping the router. :(

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming! I'm tired of sitting in my kitchen with my laptop!

I have tried without WPA, same results. I'm using TKIP.

After dicking around earlier with some settings I managed to get it working, but then I unplugged the dongle and I haven't been able to get connectivety since.

Frustratingly, configuring the dongle often causes the network configuration applet to freeze.

So have you tried just disabling all the security (WPA or WEP) and the DHCP server? The DHCP server assigns IP's btw, so if you turn this off you will have to assign all the IP's manually.

At least you can make sure that it's neither of those things this way, then enable them one by one to find the problem if it does work this way.
