Hi guys, Is it better to take out contact with phone or buy phone, then take out contract or but phone and use prepaid. Sorry q must have come up before. Have no issue in buying phone, but heard that better to take out contract??? may be wrong. Thanks.

It really depends on your needs. If you don't call that much then I guess prepaid is ok. Especially if you're a student still and need help managing your spend. Just irritating having to buy airtime the whole time.
The nice thing with contracts is that usually the bundled data and minutes you get are almost free and all you're really paying for is the phone.

Take a top up contract if you're worried about additional charges. Check your coverage before deciding on a provider.

After 15 year on contract i moved to prepaid with cell c, was spending R800-R1000. I buy R300 airtime on the 1st of each month (on internet banking when I'm making my other payments) and thats it... As i'm sure you know for your R300 you get 900mb data free and calls and sms to cell c numbers are basically free... plus its 0.99c p/m on per second billing...
Won't go back.... time we all start benefiting on the specials offered to the masses....

What do you use R400-R500 airtime for? Work?
I doubt I'll ever go back on contract. Jump between wifi at work and home, so don't need data, and don't really make a lot of phone calls. Have been sitting with about R70 airtime for 2 months now.

Prepaid rates have gone down a lot recently, there is stiff competition.

You get prepaid calls from 69c a minute, contract is almost double that.
After 20 years on contract I went on to prepaid this month and its a whole lot cheaper.
On prepaid you will spend R250-300 for the same services.
- MTN 60c/min, or 66c/min with recharge bounus
- TM SimSonke (if using data, only on-net bundles are cheap, so check your coverage)
- Cell C for big on-net bonuses, but short term, so you have to keep eyes on it
- Vodacom - not on the list

For example the MTN MyChoice Contracts, which are either open or capped for TopUp. Best thing about MyChoice is that you get data offered to you at really great prices e.g. 2GB for R120. That's R60/GB.
Only draw back is that a lot of things do happen in 24mths in the tech ind. But, thats why TopUp is great because you don't buy if the data is too expensive. I doubt if prices for the latest phones would drop. They drop only as the device you have is getting outdated.

On my Red advantage contract I pay R999 for unlimited sms, 700min talk time and 1gb of data and according to Vodacom if I was on prepaid I would pay roughly half of that. there words not mine???

You no longer get free phones with contracts :-(. The price of phones are too high for them to be subsidised like they used to be.
honestly I am waiting for my contract to expire to go over to prepaid, I am currently paying R300 a month for 75 minutes, 150 megs of data and 200 smses. I never use the smses but the talk time and data disappear quickly on prepaid I'd be getting twice those.

I myself recently made the jump to prepaid after my contract finally ended. That contract was a bargain, I got more out of it than I paid, however I can;t say the same thing for new contracts or even upgrades. Looking at what you get, and how much you pay monthly, it just doesn't make any sense financially. Pretty much bought a phone from Orange's ZA portal (very attractive prices) and switched to prepaid. Now it costs me less, and if I use less than I bought, I pay less the next month ect.

I got myself the Vodacom uchoose flexi 200 top up contract sim only deal. It costs R129 per month fixed not increase in price and you get R200 per month airtime and 1GB data every month.
The call rate is R1.80 to any network which gives you 111minutes [R200 airtime] to any network anytime. Best deal out there I think.
Even with the call rate @ R1.80 is still cheaper than Cellc prepaid 66c AND MTN 1c per second price plan because you get 1GB free data with vodacom.
If you don't phone that much you can use the inclusive airtime to buy extra data if need be.
