They easily could have said load shedding will be delayed by 1 hr from 12pm to allow for matric results to be received after which loadshedding will commence from 1-6.

A mosquito net will help with one of those 2 things - makes all the difference in my world- mozzies latch on to me on some sort of supernatural level
 
So thoughtful of Eskom, nothing like a romantic candle lit dinner, practice run before Valentines day.

Though if you don't have electricy then you can't cook so do you just skip straight to the after dinner desert?

Seems like a solid strategy - load shed at night when it doesn't really affect most businesses and use the pump storage as a giant battery with soon to come online solar (hopefully) to run things to cater to day peak usage.

i mean it is better than this sporadic constant shedding otherwise, it does have its issues in some senses yes but i think overall it is a bit better. they should have been doing things like this 10 years ago though, not now. You would also hope that they would be constantly working to long term fix issues as well, but nope. i mean sure loadshed us all for a year 3hrs a day constant for example, but then do the maintenance etc.

yeah it is more sensible for the economy and commuting etc but it still affects people, think of security systems and oxygen machines etc.
 
Whats more disturbing is how their "unplanned breakdowns" appear to be able to follow some kind of schedule...

what always makes me wonder is how they can be some vague number out, like where does 47MW come from, i thought the units were ~600MW, does this mean they are running units well below design to just keep them going?

Yeah, my dad has a machine for his sleep apnea. Night time load-shedding plays havoc, although he does tend to only go to sleep after 2am, so it's really the 2-4:30am and 4:6:30am slots which are a real bugger for him.

Eskom’s power stations each have between two and six units. The output of these units range from 970MW per unit at Koeberg nuclear power station to as little as 57MW per unit at the Port Rex gas-fired power station. Only eight MW is needed to supply a little town like Parys in the Free State and more than three 600MW units are needed to supply the 1 947MW peak demand required to power the Tshwane Metro area.
 
interesting that this mornings notice only said over 14000MW, its like they are being purposefully deceptive now, not just out of stupidity.
