Pressure to upgrade fixed lines

Hasn't there been pressure for the last few years?

Or am I missing something here?

I take it the outcry of the residents of this country is not considered pressure - the only pressure that is taken into consideration is the lack of pressure from the potential loss of funds in the coming months on Telscum's vault.

"The new Telkom CEO has now been appointed on a permanent basis, so we can expect a new phase of activity. This could bring an end to the previous ’wait and see what happens’ approach to network upgrades," he says.

When did this happen?

Also, will be interesting to see whether September will hold the status quo, or push for aggressive price reductions and new bundles a la Multichoice.

According to Baker, Telkom may now be under increased pressure to act quickly to upgrade its fixed-line network. "Previously Telkom was able to point to the ongoing negotiations and investors and customers were possibly being patient in the expectation that things would change once the uncertainty had been removed with regard to the ownership of the fixed line network. That uncertainty has now passed so we can expect investors and customers to be renewing pressure upon Telkom to increase network capacity and solve the problems of copper theft."

Telkom will admit copper theft from its own lines, but they won't admit network capacity's falling short...

Time's running out, should Telkom act now and start cutting its prices and upgrade its network, then they might still have a chance, but I don't think they'll make it... lots of lost opportunities and lots of angry and upset customers setting to jump ship at the first opportunity...

my word! is telkom actually getting it's back side in gear and doing "something"?!

ps. go Kabel-X !!! i wonder if they can lay a cable from my house to a isp?

My prediction:

Let the network degrade till LLU is in effect. Argue LLU means everyone owns it and then get the government and competitors to pay most of the cost...

According to Baker this is good news for Kabel-X, whose technology replaces underground copper cables with fibre-optic cables without the need to excavate.

How on earth do they do that?
